$200 Egg
Here it is. My 200.00 egg after 5 months and 4 days of feeding my chickens.
All costs included it only cost me about 200. It better be good.

Ha, don't worry, the eggs will get bigger and better. We have 50 Rhode Island Red's running around here. Talk about good eggs! Once you eat your farm-fresh eggs, it's hard to choke down eggs from the store!
Do you let the hens free range at all?

MVP...That's what I thought when I got my first egg from my Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rock hens. [:)][:)] I only started with a dozen and now they have died down to three from various calamities. Mainly marauding neighborhood animals. The rewards are great, though, when I go out and they come running and throw their little wings around my ankles and greet me. [:)][:I] Chickens are as loyal as my labs, but they don't retrieve worth a damn.....[}:)][}:)]

You are right there. I was frying some eggs from the store the other night and they seemed awful watery. Can't beat farm fresh.0 -

Yes, they are free ranging and I lock them up at night.
To many Owls,Coyotes, possums and bobcats around here at night.
I am thinking of leaving them in their coop now until they get an egg laying system down. I fed them this morning and there was Egg #2 in as many days. They are on a roll. 2 more days and I will have enough for an omlette.
I have the barred Rocks and Buffed Orpingtons. So far it is the Buffs that layed the 2 eggs.0 -
Sounds like you are soon going to be covered up in eggs! It just takes time for them to reach maturity and start laying. Our neighbor has about 30 Rhode Island Reds that free range all over his property and mine. I don't mind as they have started nesting in my carport. I can be in the den and hear one start cackling and run out and grab the fresh egg! Usually get about a dozen a week from them. Told the neighbor about it when they started, and he said to grab all the eggs I could find. No problem! Free, free-range eggs are great! 0 -

MVP....My ladies roam free during the day and exactly at 8:30pm go back in the henhouse to roost. Between 8am and 10am each morning, you will find Samantha, the Rhode Island Red, on the nest in the henhouse and sometime between 11pm and 1pm, Gladyce and Betty lay their eggs. I always lock them up at night too, for their protection.

Me and my uncle were out loading logs in the morning and he was ribbing me about my eggless chickens the yesterday. He left with a load of logs and I heard that egg legging cackle I never heard my chickens make before. Checked the coop and there was that chicken on an egg.
This morning when I fed them there was the same cackle and egg #2 was in there.
My costs per egg production was instantly cut in half. Now i have 2 $100 eggs.0 -

We have Rhode Island Reds also. I only have 6 but they keep us in eggs.
My mom makes good money selling eggs. Her hens free range and her feed costs are pretty much nothing. She gets 85 to 95 eggs a day. Sells all of them and could sell twice that many if she wanted to expand.0 -

I know what it is like to be chased down by 17 chickens. I can only laugh when these guys come chasing after me.

I never could get mine to use their nestboxes I created. They always would use a community nest on the floor of the chicken house. 0 -

I think I might nail a peice of plywood at a 45 degree on top of the nest boxes but haven't so far because that is their favorite roost.

So far both eggs have been in the same nest box. I hope they all decide to use the nest boxes like good chickens.
I probably should buy some of those fake eggs at the feedstore tomorrow and place them in the boxes. I am amazed at how the chicken knew how to use the nest box. I am still trying to figure out how the Rooster knew how to crow.
These chickens knew everything they needed to know about being a checken the day I got them. <scratching head>0 -

DO IT NOW... it'l force the hens to "box-up". no ROOSTER needed. He's a "stress factor" your hens will lay, no-matter what.
You don't want fertelized eggs,anyhow. WIthout that NOIZY ROOSTER, them hens will OVERLOAD you with eggs, in a few weeks.
Check the coop daily, talk to them like babies, coooo at them, whisper to them,,,you'll be down to 50 eggs per penny soon....[;)]0 -

I got a rooster and two hens a couple years ago from a guy. Now I have game chickens coming out the kazoo. I got another rooster and hen recently to refresh the bloodline. I love my chickens!! Each of the hens and roosters have their own personality.
Let's see, the boys are Valentino, Rocky, Boca Grande, Kareem, Lucky, Frog and Mucho Cajones. I have to keep these guys separated, because they are nasty! Also, I have to handle them often so they won't come after me!
The girls are Thelma, Louise, Blanca, Guera, Madelyn, Rosalie and four others who I have yet to name.
I gave two roosters and six hens back to my friend when I picked up the two new ones.
One of my hens and a rooster were killed in domestic disputes. I never let them out of an enclosure because we have eagles, hawks and owls that regularly check them out. Also, the bobcats, coyotes and skunks make regular appearances trying to figure out how to get to them. Since they prey on the squirrels (little bastids!), I don't bother them.0
