nothing wrong with that choice.
As you can see, no one here is in total agreement. All the cartridges in this thread are great for varmints.0 -
Pros and cons on all listed
25-06 very good choice - Flat - long range - Heavier bullet - Expensive for varmints
.243 also good choice same reasons - little less expensive
.223 cheaper to shoot good medium to long range
22-250 little more expensive but very good range
.204 - don't have - I hear it is a good medium range
.17 same - don't have
my favorite right now is 25-06 for bigger critters and my TC Contender in .223 for fun0 -
Alot of choices out there. The AR in .223 is as good as any as long as you hit what you're aiming at. I'm just partial to the 22-250.
One of the guys at my range has a heavy barrel AR that is just amazingingly accurate. He consistantly has at least three holes touching, at 200 yards, out of a five shot group.0 -
Go buy yuorself a Rem 700 vls in .223 I have one it is amazing .250 groups at 100 yds[;)] 0 -
If your buying used, buy whatever has the best scope. 0 -

Very wise suggestion!
Burris or Leupod trump 4 aces on used guns.
A lot of guns get sold because they don't shoot well. They have junk scopes on a good rifle causing lots of accuracy issues.0 -
Use whichever rifle you like. All the calibers listed will do the job. I've shot varmits with everything from .22 rimfire to 45/120, currently I carry a 25/06 loaded with some 87 grain spire points. Dave 0 -
Dollar wise I'd go with 223 very cheap ammo. 0 -
22-250,55gr Nosler Balistic tip,39.5 gr IMR 4350.Cut holes at 100 yards off of the bench, good for varmits out to 375 yards.Good luck trying to choose. 0 -
243 win with 55gr bal tips 0 -
22/250 if it's calm--60 grain bullet
243 if there's a breeze---87 grain bullet
25/06 if it's windy---87 grain bullet
All these are capable of shooting out to 450 yards with some asurance of one shot kills.
Clouder..0 -
For "all around" go .223 !! 60gr. V-Max with compressed load of Varget. One hole at 100 yds. and very accurate "out there".quote:Originally posted by asquires
