Suggestions for next handgun
I am just starting to shoot pistols. My wife and children ages 17, 19 and 21 are shooting with me. All will eventually take conceal carry class. I have purchased 2 carry guns and a plinking target gun. S&W 637 and a Bersa Thunder 380. The target gun is a Walther P22. (longer barrel version) I shoot at my hunting club range. We shoot steel targets scattered about the range berms, paper targets at various distances and assorted dueling type steel targets.
What should I consider for my next pistol. I would like a larger frame longer barrel revolver, possibly one in a .22 cal as well. I also find larger caliber autos fun. I am not concerned with size for carry use for the next few guns. I may start reloading ammo as well to keep costs down as a few friends have offered use of their gear. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Rusty

wow, thats a pretty open question... ummmm, i love my Glock, but you can't go wrong with a good 1911 0 -

Get a Rock Island then. It's a good quality 1911 for a reasonable price.0 -
Look at the Taurus PT1911, good gun for the money,IMO.

I would suggest a S&W 686 6" revolver. You can shoot .357 or .38 special. I am comfortable using mine for anything from target shooting to whitetail hunting.... 0 -

Imagine the feeling of owning something bout 160 years old and feel the history in your hands.
Then it should probably be a good investment also...
May i suggest a Remington 1858...U can still find really decent ones
to a reasonable price or if you got more cash go for the Rolls Royce

I carry a Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum with a 6" barrel on a daily basis. It is all the power you need to defend against evil should it rear its ugly head, powerful enough to drop an angry bear if you're in the woods, and the action is smooth and easy for anyone to operate. I highly recommend getting a Redhawk!
If .44 magnum is a little too powerful, you can always shoot .44 specials out of it.0 -

get yourself a 1911, OR a Glock. Something in .40 cal or .45 Or if ammo price is a major concern, check out the walther p22. 0 -
I would say that unless you want to buy more guns just because, you might want to think about a good carry gun, and buy variants of your chosen caliber. I like the 38/357, or the 44spl/44mag. Another thing about those: there are lever action rifles that also shoot them, so your investment into dies and so on is less costly.
Revolvers are reallly reliable, simple and long lasting, easy to clean - good attributes for a carry gun. Autos are complex, not as reliable, they are dirty birdies - harder to clean and maintain, and I think they promote the "Shoot more and aim less" style of shooting.
Autos are sure a lot of fun, though, and with practice, you can shoot as well or better than with a revolver.

My last was a Vaquero in .45LC, but in your place I would buy another GP-100 in stainless. In semi-auto the Taurus 24/7 or the 1911. 0 -
Get a .357 big ole revolver and you'll never find love sweeter than that. Rugers and Taurus's are inexpensive and will outlast you. 0 -

I had questions that pretty much mirrored yours. The answer for me, since I already owned a few revolvers and had an auto or two around the house (including that Walther P-22), was Thompson/Center's Encore pistol.
I plan on continuing shooting a long time, and buying barrels for the T/C just seemed a better way to spend my gun money, and still maintain some good resell value should I ever decide to move on.
So, I have barrels in both .44 Magnum (12 inches long, with Red Dot scope), and .22LR (15 inches long, with Weaver 2X scope). Changing them out to go from plinking or target practice to shooting hard, takes only a couple of minutes. I do shoot usually with either a tripod, or prone with bipod.
My next barrel is looking like a .22-250, and then, I'm gonna see about converting to a rifle, and get some big ole caliber for shooting a long way off.
Shucks, I might get several encores out of my Encore.
Just something to think about. Seems I recall having about 500 bucks in my original purchase, which was the gun with .44 Mag barrel, maybe a tad more.

I have done a little research on Rock Island Armory. I am not finding a lot of users out there. Am I looking in the wrong places? I will hunt up a store that carries them locally but would like to hear about them online a bit as well. thanks0 -

As another happy Rock Island owner, I'd HIGHLY recommend one. It's the only 1911 I've ever owned that hasn't had a single hiccup, ever (with over 2000 rounds through it).
