...a steaming gut pile!
Just got in from Thanksgiving at our farm in TN. Had a blast! My son loves to hunt, so he and I spent more time in the woods than indoors with family. I had the Marlin 30-30 that I got from my parents on my 13th birthday 32 years ago, plus son had his 7mm-08. Said that he really wanted to hunt with my gun, so I gladly let him. That "leverolution" ammo is awesome stuff!
Here is Wednesday's result...
He took this doe at 40 yards. She was standing with her back toward us and his shot went through the back of her head and out the side of the jaw. Dead where she stood.
Here is Thursday's hunt...
We were walking to the blind that morning just after daylight, topped a little rise and this guy was looking at us at about 80 yards. He used the Marlin and popped it in the neck. Dropped in its tracks.
Last, but not least, here is Friday morning's result...
This buck is a story he will be telling to his grandkids. We had finished the morning hunt and were walking back to the house and this guy just walked out of the woods 15 yards away, perfectly broadside. His nose was to the ground and he had his mind on...well...you know. Before I could say anything, son had the gun up and had shot. Deer jumped straight up and RAN TOWARD US! I was honestly afraid he was going to run through us! Son shot again (a miss!), and deer turned again and went back into the woods. When he turned, we were actually sprayed with blood! He had double-lung shot him, and he was spraying blood like a water hose from the exit wound. Ran about 20 yards into the woods and had a head-on collision with a big hickory tree. That Hornady ammo amazed me!
One of the best Thanksgivings I have had in a while. Son has killed other deer, and other bucks, but none as big as those two. It was great watching him. Made me realize he is growing up way too fast. Only problem now is that I am going to be out about $800 in taxidermy's fees! [:o)]
One more pic. Dad heard the shot on Friday's deer and came down to see what was down. He has COPD and can hardly get around, but he took this pic when we were dragging the deer out of the woods.

Your not gonna believe this I hunt using the exact same setup and our jeep is even the same color and I think the same year. we use the exact same hitch extension with that carrier. 0 -
Since I'm a dashing urbanite, I've never been to a deer hunt.

Yea, they do. Just have to make sure they're stretched tight! And the guy who processes our deer is about 6 miles down the road. Wasn't like I was driving cross-country or anything.0 -

I use bungies to secure stuff *inside* my truck bed.
I would've used ropes or straps in your situation.
I don't trust them too much.0 -
