I'm posting these two pics that I found on my computer of a few pieces of the collection I'll be taking an inventory of this week. These aren't my inventory pics but I thought those that helped me in my Inventory thread in the Ask the Expert section might like to see these anyway. Thank you all for the help in that thread. I'm sorry about your loss. You are not the only woman on here but it seems like the men have more time to post then the women do. Wonder why that could be[?] I'm guessing it hasn't been too long since his passing as an inventory and valuation would have needed to be done for settling the estate. You are a brave person to tackle this or anything similar. Find a buddy of your late husband's who also is into guns and have him help you. Otherwise, let these guys on here help you out. Do your own research too with the Blue Book someone mentioned. Also with your inventory take photos to keep with the list. You could also see if your husband insured them as an additional item on your homeowner's policy. If he did they would have a list of them whihc would be a good place to start and they would have values also. Good luck with the inventory. And again, my best to you especially now. 0 -
There has to be someone in a city the size of Pittsburgh who can do an appraisal for you. I had a gun dealer friend (now retired) who was often approached by customers with firearms wanting to know what they were worth.
He put it to them simply. For a FEE he would give them his honest appraisal of what he believed were their value. If he didn't know he had enough contacts in the business to find out. If it was the customers goal to sell the firearms he would tell them what he was willing to pay for them, take it or take them home. The simple difference between an APPRAISAL and OFFER TO PURCHASE.
Your situation should be a wake-up call to all of us to have our inventories in order and properly appraised so as not to leave anyone behind with that burden.0 -
Karen - I don't know where in Pittsburgh you are, but there is a gunshop in Washington, PA just off of I-79 (right by the Wal-mart) called ACE. They are pretty good guys there and if I remember correctly they do appraisals.
If not, you could try Big Buck Sports Shop up in Wexford. They are right off of I-79. If you are heading north from Pittsburgh, take the Wexford exit (right after the I279 merge) and turn right. It is up the hill behind the BP on the left.0 -

Thank you all for the condolences, great welcome, good advice and a good chuckle. You truly are a great bunch. And thank you Handgun and others for pointing me in a good direction for gun shops and appraisers. As I said in my Ask the Experts Inventory post, doing this inventory is part of the grieving process for me in the loss of my husband so being involved with it is important to me.
Some of you guys will appreciate this and I should have put this in my post with the pictures. These pics were taken on our wedding day. We had a small service at my parents house and my hubby took a few pieces of his collection to my parents' home for the "guys" to see.. on our wedding day no less
On the full auto question, its been awhile since I even looked at these pics before I posted them. I believe the only full auto item there is what I think is the Uzi on the right side of Pic #1. The gun on the left with the holes in the barrel was a custom job and I can't remember what that was. Sorry guys.0 -

It is a Ruger Mini-14, accessorized with a Butler Creek folding stock; the "holes" in the barrel is actually a barrel shroud (to help cool the barrel); it looks like an Eagle flash-hider/front sight. A nice set-up.
If you have original Ruger factory high-capacity magazines for the Mini-14, they are worth a premium. With the accessories on the Mini-14, I would expect some high-capacity magazines -- if they are not Ruger factory, they are not worth as much. (The auction site usually has a good quantity of both the factory and after-market magazines, so you can see the differences in price first hand.)0 -

Hubby had all of the proper clearances, paperwork, tax stamps, etc. and he was always a stickler for everything being registered properly and done by the book so all is good.

Competent (Joe), when you say the high capacity mags, are you talking about the ones that are large and round and hold about 100 rounds because I do have several of these.0 -

Drum magazines! Ruger never made any; those would be aftermarket. If they are all plastic (probably clear plastic on the back) and are "one" drum they are not worth as much as if they look like "double" drums extending out of each side of the gun when mounted in the gun. The "double" drums would probably be "Beta" magazines. (I'm not sure on the current price, but searching the auction for "Mini-14 drum" will probably give results.)
The factory Ruger high-capacity magazines would be "banana" shaped -- they would hold either 20 or 30 rounds. The 30 round Ruger factory mags would be worth more than the 20-round ones. (They would be stamped with the word "Ruger" on their base if they are factory magazines.)0 -
Yes.. drum magazines. I couldn't remember what they were called. I actually have metal drum magazines that are not double as you mentioned, but I won't know what they fit until I do my inventory. I will be sure to look out for the banana mags you mentioned and note manufacturer's names on all of the mags. I have a ton of mags - just need to figure out what they go to. 0 -

I inherited a large collection of firearms from my son's father when he died in a car wreck over 3 years ago. I'm still finding them in his old house to this day.
I've tried my best to learn all I can.
If I was you I would just take them out and shoot them. For me shooting them brought back memories and little bits and pieces of information on some of the guns. But you will have more and more questions and you remember. Or at least that was my case.
I'm lucky because I have a friends and family who are knowledgeable about firearms.

Way to go Cutie on the motoX. I used to ride dirt bikes a long time ago and love it. Then I became a Mom.. and well.. that sorta put an end to that.
