Ammo possession question

The question is can I possess legally, say, a box of Winchester Ranger Law Enforcement Ammo? Is there a website I can go to that will give me info on this? If it matters, I live in Louisiana. Also, what about Black Talons? The reason I ask, is that I have come across a nice deal on a "few" rounds of these. I know they stopped making the Black Talons awhile back, and didn't they pass a few laws on the possession of this ammo in a few states?

Any info appreciated.

    Not a slam on you bama. Just reading your legitimate question got me thinking how far America has fallen from its individual liberty roots.[V]

    Not sure about Louisana law.

    I don't find anything in the Criminal Code referring to possession of ammo designated for law enforcement. The link below will take you to those criminal statutes--especially RS 14:95 and following. There may be federal prohibitions with regard to ammo. I just don't know of it.

    I own and continue to buy Ranger ammunition, as well as Black Talon. By the way, "Ranger" is simply "Black Talon" with a more PC name.

    The only problem with owning Black Talon is the cost! OF is right (I also have both). You can save some bucks by going with the Ranger. The black box Talons MIGHT have some collector value someday. My youngest son will find out!

    AFAIK Winchester voluntarily stopped selling "Ranger" to the civilian market, somebody makes sure that the ammo leaks into gun shows and sometimes online retailers though

    i have "federal premium law enforcement ammunition" for my glock 23. i asked at the gunshop what the troopers and county cops used and he handed me a box. when i took the class for my ccw the instructors recommended that we use the same thing police use so if we ever had a situation to go to court we would not appear to be over zealous by using "super man stopper extreme penetrating devestator" rounds.

    Same thought: If you are ever taken to court over using your firearm, take pains to hire the lawyer(s) that your state police use to resolve their firearms related legal issues. Big plus. Think about it. Joe

    I have Black Talons. I use them in my 9mm. There's nothing evil about them, aside from the name that the MSM doesn't like.

    The "Law Enforcement" tag is applied to ammunition and other products as a marketing tool, same with the term "Tactical".

    As Old Fool pointed out, the Black Talon never actually disappeared from production. Ranger/Black Talon, same-same.

    One example of how much difference a name change can make:

    Remember the media screaming about the danger the Black Talons posed for ER personnel because those "buzz-saw talons" tore their surgical gloves? By changing the color and giving it a less evil sounding name this problem somehow went away. Funny how that works. [:D]

    I'm not sure if it's all of Illinois but there a few towns in IL that ban Black Talons.

    Bamafan, Im pretty sure that you can own all the Ranger LE ammo you want. As for Black Talons the last few Ive seen for sale are not Black Talons. Some folks sale them not even knowing there not really Black Talons. I would say there is a good supply of them somewhere though? The Market hype does help sale ammo, for example Hornady just released the Tactical Action Performance ammo. But Ive shot and seen some results from others and the (TAP) is very good about expanding. Some Towns or Cities may have regulations regarding Black Talon ammo, but none that I know of. Safe Shooting!!

    Thanks for all the info you guys have giving. Done a little investigating on my own, and came up with nothing saying I couldn't legally possess them. That being said, I purchased some Rangers yesterday. Should get them by next week.

    Try pure lead wrapped in teflon tape, gas check, and sized.[:D]Dave

    Where did you here about the teflon tape idea for a lead bullet lube? I can't remember where I read this idea? Have you tried it? I've also read about gas checks made from soda can materials. I've got boubts the tape'll stay on the full length of the barrel possibly causing the bullet to lead the barrel more than the regular lube. But anyway anything regarded as an "inhumane" round is going to get you in lots of legal trouble if used on someone. What's body armor good for when a shot to the head or through the arm pit area could kill anyway? What do you think a cop'll do when he finds this ammo in your gun after a shooting. How do you think his partners'll treat you even if you're not the perp.

    Generally speaking any changes on the standard gun or ammo you may use to defend your self may appear to be a "modification" and unless you're handycapped you may be viewed as a "more efficiant killer" in civil court. Things like why did you choose this unique ammo? To give you an advantage? And other crazy arguments. You most likely understand what I'm saying. No hand loads you made your self either.

    I understand the arguement about handloads and more lethal ammunition. And I'll argue that I'm only trying to eliminate the threat. It burns my butt to no end that I have to handicap myself when trying to defend myself or others.
    I've used the teflon taped bullets in place of paper patching them. The tape does not stay with the bullet once it leaves the barrel. Patched correctly, I've never had any lead fouling problems using teflon tape. It takes WAY less time and no drying time is needed as there is with paper patching.
    The way I look at the self defense issue is you're going to be going 'downtown' if you use factory stuff or handloads and you'll be engaging an attorney either way. I'd rather hire an attorney than have my family hire an undertaker. That's my $.02. Dave

    I was in a local gun and reloading shop today--the owner is a retired city cop--and he said the only ammo prohibited for civilian possession/use is the teflon-coated, so-called "cop-killer" rounds.

    You know those old CZ pistols were said to be "cop killers" cuz the bullets like to slip through vests. I can't think of the model off hand. I almost bought one but found out I'd have to go to an out door range, cuz the indoor guys say these types of bullets slip through the back stops. So I didn't get one. Is it a 58? Well I can't remember the exact model it consists of two numbers though.
