Whats your Take on 17 HMR
Hey everybody, I'd like to know what your opinion on this little round is. Ive heard good things when it comes to target shooting, really flat shooting, but how about varmint hunting? I know it will take care of ground hogs, rabbit, and squirell, but how about coyote? How far is this round good for? I'd also like to know if you own one and if so what kind?

Another answer to a question that was never asked. No real advantage over the .22 lr, imo. Plus the ammo is VERY expensive, and you have no way to reload your own.

I had a Marlin 917V, I sold it to my brother and bought a Marlin 980V. The reasons was cost of ammo and it was god awful LOUD.The 22lr has done all I've asked of it so I'm happy. On a side note I also had a BSA Sweet Seventeen scope that was a piece of junk. 0 -

I personally like the round. Yes it has its drawbacks (wind drift, range) over the 223, but no round is perfect (thats why I have several different calibers).
It is fun to shoot...and it is just flat out nasty on groundhogs, squirrels and all sorts of little rodents/vermin. I have never used it on any larger varmints though0 -
I love mine, you can get a box of 50 under $10.
But then again I could take .22LR, 22Mag & .14Mach2 out of the same box. SAKO QUAD!! [:D] Love it0 -

That is a big one for me. It is a nice flat shooting round good to about 150yrds from what I hear. The local shops where I work sell lots of them for use in the orchards with out too much over kill (.223 ect).
It has way better killing power then the .22lr does but that is due to bullet design. If you could put a better bullet in a .22lr, oh wait they do now and it is called HM2. I know the cal is different but basically all they did was put a better bullet in a .22lr/.22 mag case. Think about shooting standard lead bullets out of a .308, then put a Vmax type bullet in it.
I have a 17HMR revolver and it is kinda neat but I hardly shoot it. I have found the Vmax type bullet do a better job of putting down varmints then the TNT HP, at least in my gun.
Over all it is a cool gun, just not for everyone. If the ammo was about half the price I think it would be way more popular. In .22lr you can get 10x the ammo for the same price and for those of us that hand load we can shoot our big guns [:D] for about the same price so why go down in cal?0 -
I bought mine for fun, I bought it to replace my .308 bolt action.
Why? Because the Tikka T3 was worth 500+ I got 500+ for it and bought my marlin for $115 I never took the Tikka Hunting I will take this 17hmr hunting small game, ammo was cheaper than .308.
Yes a .22 will pretty much do everything the .17hmr will do, however they don't make much in the way of .22lr heavy barrel bolt actions the .17hmr was actual cheeper concidering what I got for the money in most cases the .17hmr is more accurate than a store bought .22
Ammo cost isn't a big factor to me, with the Tikka I would go to the range be there for 3 hours and maybe fire 20 rounds at most. This is my accuracy gun not my plinking gun if it ends up like my Tikka I will use it to train my breathing and accuracy and get the bonus of being able to take it squrrel hunting.
Right now its relagated to the safe since I don't have a scope/bipod for it yet or scope anyhow still havent decided if I will put a bipod on it or not. Had a scope on it for a while and that thing could shoot circles around any .22 I have however the scope wasn't ideal so im looking for something I can afford to replace it.
I like it, duno if its purely I need to kill something thing sure a .22 or shotgun will work if you want to have a bit of fun/improve your skills a .17 hmr I think is the way to go.
P.S. I see no reason for the .17 in the reg 22 shell forget what there called seems like a crappier round than .22 thats why I went with the .17 hmr0 -

I have had lot's of fun with my Savage 93 stainless. I continue to be amazed at the accuracy and power of that cute little bullet. It has been one shot deadly on crows, beaver, muskrats, armadillos and cats. The gun shoots way better than me. Plinking 20 gauge hulls dead center at 100 yards has become too easy.
When I bought the gun I had my doubts and thought it might be a mistake but it stays loaded and continues to be my go-to gun for small critters and fun plinking. Cheapo scope it came with seems to be okay, for now anyway.

I have had a CZ 452 lefthand in 17 HMR for about six months and love it. The points the other writers have made about ammo cost are true. But the 17 is nice because of low muzzle blast and you can easily see your hit. Even a 223 bucks enough that you sometimes do not see the hit. Further, in more populated areas, the bullets will not go nearly as far, and tend to not ricochet. I have made clean kills on rockchucks, squirrels, and jacks to 200 yards or so. My friend shot a coyote with his 17 at 100 yards using the 20 gr XT bullet. It stoned him and even exited after going the length of his body.
The ammo and rifles tend to be quite accurate. Mine shoots under an inch at 100.0 -

I agree with you here, it is actually cheaper to use the .222 or .223 because you can reload these very cheaply.0 -

I have a Ruger and a Savage with a Bull Barrel, the Savage was cheaper and shoots as well as the Ruger.
And I am a huge Ruger fan with several of their Model 77 MK II Rifles and handguns.Its a very accurate cartridge which has become expensive to shoot, used to be $5.00 or so same as a box of.22 Mag. They are effective on animals up to the size of a groundhog with a clean head shot, if you dont get a head shot usually they make it back to their holes and suffer what may be a slow death. I limit my shots to 100 yrds. I usually hunt coyote with a .223 or 22-250. However the .17HMR is very accurate and capable of good clean kills as seen with the fox above.0 -

As a reloader I prefer the .22 Hornet for small game that needs more than a .22 LR. But if you do not relaod a .22 mag or a .17 HMR will work great for you. 0 -
I'm getting the impression that everyone that own's a .17HMR loves it and every one that doesn't own one hates them. I personally don't think this round will be killed off like the .20RMR was. I think this round has a nitch. Ive seen quite a few video's online that show how impressive this round really is. Is it perfect? of course not, its very limited to certain aplications, but all rounds have their flaws, thats why there are hundreds of different types of bullets. just make sure its not too windy out or you'll probly get pissed off.[:D]
