I am for legalization of some drugs!

As stated you can tax the crap out of them to help this country with money. You would help solve the gang problems as they are only fighting for the drug money. It would be easier to controll and manage in a way that alcohol is.

There are many pluses to legalizeing!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Doug, but WHAT A REVOLUTIONARY THOUGHT! DEA has proved to be just as useful as ATF, but most people just can't give up the idea that their hard earned money have to go somewhere...

Why indeed...Think maybe it has to do with making money as prohibition did??

It's a no-win war----always has been and always will be. However, our "government" will never admit defeat. Selling drugs will bring more prison time than murder
stupid. Marijuana should have been legalized years ago. I'd lots rather meet a driver "high on marijuana" than one "drunk on booze".

Are there no dissenting views, on this subject??

Usually when I bring up the subject of drug legalization, folks are all over me like white on rice.

Drugs fall in the category of personal choice. Now if you violate another person to obtain, or while being induced by drugs that is where the hammer comes down.

I do not care if people smoke pot, crack, crank or whatever... It's not my business, when they come in my window at night to borrow my tv so they can acquire some crack then I will make it my business.

I'll disagree. I think drugs should remain outlawed. No good can come of legalizing them.

I might support a very highly monitored medicinal marijuana legalization.

    Legalize? Absolutely not.

I am in favor though of decriminalizing small amounts of weed.

But not coke, crack, heroin, and all the assorted designer drugs, like X, meth, PCP.

Up until 1930 or so, most "drugs" were legal in this country. De-criminalization would drop prices, making crack (or whatever) cheap enough that a crack head could work at a carwash and still be able to buy enough to kill themselves in a couple years, without having to steal, rob & prostitute themselves.
But it will never happen, there is too much money in the bureaucracy, consider the related crime, like thieving and murder that are a by product of the prohibition, from the leo's to the judges, lawyers to the penal institutions & politicians, the amount of money spent is staggering, and none of those bureaucrats are going to let their budgets get smaller.

C'mon Doug, "gateway" is a term much like "Assault weapon" in that both were coined with the idea of imparting a negative connotation to an inanimate object, the goal of which is to vilify it in the minds of the masses, and make it easier to try to get it outlawed.
Billions and billions have been wasted on TWOD since before Bensinger was in charge of the BNDD(bureau of narcotics and dangerous drugs), to way after we're all feeding worms. There's money in them drugs, too! Whether it's bringin' 'em in, or takin' 'em out; somebody's are making a killing!
I think that decriminalization has to happen sooner or later, if not only for the relief pot provides for cancer patients (tough to eat if you're throwing everything up right afterwards), to the alkaloid compounds that aren't speed that help arthritis sufferers' pain go away.
More people are in jeopardy from drunks than some pot smoker, but a speed freak or meth head or crack piper can be just as hazardous to your health as a mad dog; I don't condone the use of any of the white powder drugs, and think that folks who use that stuff are a self-limiting population.

If I were not a parent of young kids, 11 + 8 year olds...I'd say legalize them all. Dongizmo makes a valid point about the $$$ involved.

However, since I do have kids, how am I supposed to keep them off drugs, if legal, when everyone is high as a kite? I live in the Miami area...drug capitol of the US. Plenty of drugs around...don't need them available at the local Kwikey Mart as well.

We need the fear of jail time to help persuade the youngsters that drugs are bad.

Got a 9 and 6 year old myself, I'll stick by the morals I teach them kind of like I bet my daughters won't be knocked up when they are 16.

    No,
We need good parents to teach their kids basic moral values, and that drugs are not healthy, nor are they a path to a good life.
As it is now, kids can still get drugs, so prohibition is not working, and the by-products of the criminal drug "world" is affecting our society as a whole, both by the taxes we pay to enforce a unenforceable prohibition, and in the effect the related crime has on the cost of basic consumer goods.

If you think legalizing drugs will do any good you are kidding yourself. Legalization would only come with government regulation. Producers would have to meet the same standards pharmacudical manufactures would. The price would probably GO UP and the black market trade would still flourish along with all the problems that accompany it.

I wonder why that did not happen with alcohol?

    The gene pool needs chlorine....

In addition to legalization of drugs, I'd be willing to see them given away, at no expense, to the user......provided they undergo sterilization first

The legalization of pot would threaten the pharmaceutical industry. It would also lead to the legalization and large scale production of hemp which would be a major threat to the petroleum industry. A huge chunk of our economy is petroleum and pharmaceutical based. Factor in the money invested in law enforcement and the chances for the legalization of pot are zero.

i don't believe there has been a real "war" on drugs...obviously an open border is no battleground...around here the main stealing is methheads funding habit....locals know who is doing what but not much really happens...years ago my first wife left with kids & it was tuff till she was convicted for possession & sale of lsd...i got full custody of kids at a time when fathers never did & raised them drug free...never done any & really consider hard druggies as targets...my biggest fear is what grandkids have to face at high school age & beyond...not against legitimate medical use

My opinion isn't necessarily dissenting, but say the gubment does admit defeat and stop the war on drugs.... Criminals, bad guys, no-gooders, whatever you call them, will only find something else nefarious to get into. The criminal mind is nothing if not enterprising in finding new ways to get over on the laws of the land. I myself have never once experimented with drugs.

You are part right, the hard-core would find other endeavors, but your average pot head / crack head / junkie would find it better to work, (and would be able to work and afford their habit) as the punishment for criminal acts (robbery, thieving etc.) are worse than working.
The same people who extoll the values of drug prohibition, are also the ones who will and are promoting firearms prohibition.

I totally agree. People are going to do them anyway, might as well relieve some of the tax burden from the working class.

I am not advocating this as a political decision, but rather as a practical approach.

What everyone has said in favor of legalizing all drugs is the only solution to the problem that I can see.

    So, why aren't we ??

Folks always bring up the prohibition/alcohol situation in this discussion, and that's exactly my argument against legalizing any more drugs: Just look at all the problems alcohol misuse causes in our society!

Although it was put out as a joke, I half agree with the article in The Onion that announced:
"All Drugs Now Legal As Long As the User Is Employed"

Slipgate, one could argue pretty effectively that alchol is one of the most damaging drugs out there. Seldom hear of a family of four slaughtered on the hiway by a heroin addict. Every day by a drunk. Prohibition did not work worth crap either, and the moral imperatives are just the same.
