Long range pistol shooting
Well folks today was the day for the gods of shooting to bless me. I shot my 44mag Contender with a 10bbl at 200 yards I was just fooling around, but I do this quite often because I cant move the table by myself. I was able to hit gallon sized milk jugs. It took me 4 rounds to get on target ( I aimed about 2ft high) and from then on it was point and shoot. Oh I was using a rest. I can tell you this from the time I fire to impact I think I could set the pistol down and dance a short jig, man it took some time to get that bullet down range. Anyway I had a lot of fun and the heat was awful.

It is always a good time shooting a pistol 200 yards plus+. I take my 223 encore ever time to shoot rock chucks. 0 -
Sounds like you are ready to start shooting NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette. Your 200 yard target is a 15" ram and you have more than enough power with your .44. 0 -
I hesitate to demonstrate so completely my colossal ignorance, but I too have a .44 mag, although it's on an Encore frame. I'm using open sights, although I've done some shooting with it with 2X scope attached. First question; Can a body do decent shooting with some kind of red dot sighting system on a .44? Is the recoil too heavy? How does one mount such a sight if it could be used to good effect?
On the other hand, I bought a .22LR barrel, and have mounted the scope on it. It shoots lots cheaper than those thirty dollar boxes of .44 Rem Mag ammo. So here's my plan and my question....
I intend to order another barrel in either, 22-250, 204 Ruger, .222, or 223 (got a suggestion as to which is better? Should I look at the .243? I'm looking for long range, flat shooting, and my recoil limit as far as 'flinch' factor is concerned seems to be the .44 Mag) and I'll need a scope. Using a bipod, I can hold very steady at prone with a 2X scope. Would a 4X be better suited for the longer range of those calibers I listed above?
At this point, I'm still not certain as to how one would properly mount a scope on an Encore barrel. My present scope is a Weaver, and it's mounted on the single unitized two ring OEM T/C mount, but what about Weaver style mounts? Are they sufficiently solid?

A friend of mine has a orchard in a valley and has setup a shooting position on one side with targets and "clangers" (pieces of 1/2" steel plate hung from horseshoe shaped rebar) placed at 100, 200 & 300 yards. It works well for shooting rifles, but the fun and challenge comes in when I load up the M29 Leupold 2x. When I get overconfident shooting it at 200 yards I'll switch to the open sighted Super Blackhawk- a real lesson in humility. 0 -
SahaganBeta, here is a picture of my Encore , this is a 26" 204 Ruger with a weaver mount on it , on a mount like this you can put just about any type of reddot or scope you want , you will find a reddot works very well out to about 100 yards , after that it seems that the dot covers to large of an area , making it hard to aim well .

Yes you can use a red dot scope on a .44 magnum I had one on my taurus 44 and it was sighted in as such at 75yds and It was really accurate at that range. NO I did not get hit with the scope at all I do believe the scope was a bushnell by the way. 0 -

Best long range = .22-250
Best for cost of operation = .223 - as much as I hate to say anything nice about mouse gun calibers.

Sounds fun Dave. I used to shoot my 7 1/2" Blackhawk 45 Colt a lot at coffee cans at 100-200 yds. It was a blast. 0 -
I enjoy shooting my 6" Colt Anaconda at targets from 100 to 200 meter
targets when I get a chance. A nearby range has the silhouette (SP) targets.
My Anaconda is topped with a Tasco PPII Red dot sight. Nothing better as far as I am concerned for Whitetail hunting.0 -
Thanks for the much needed answers to my question....my Encore is currently set up as a handgun, and after adding a 22-250 (thanks for that tidbit as well, it helped me make my mind up on that issue), my next upgrades will be to the rifle configuration, where I hope to go to the long range side as well as the big side of things. I have several guns, but I've seen nothing that appeals to me so much as this Encore, with its seemingly endless menu of possibilities.
And thinking about the Red Dot device helped me to have a small epiphany of sorts. I have a 25X100mm set of binoculars set on a large Celestron telescope mount with an Edmund Scientific fork and my own clutched cradle design so the binos can be set at any angle (originally built for comet hunting). Anyhow, since I'm using the set now mostly for shooting, I realized how easy it would be to add a Red Dot to the binoculars, giving me much quicker target acquisition in use. I already have a TelRad finder on it, but it's a lot more bulky and not nearly so cool looking as the Red Dot would be.
So once again, thanks for the info! It will be used....
