I wonder how much the seller put into this gun? End label was missing on box would be a very good sign to get the serial number from seller and to contact Colt before bidding.

Seller F: The listed 3" Python nickel was a fake (it was actually 6" blue).

    JERRYS GUNS A+(112)
Buyer F: Call Colt before you bid! He should have checked before he bid.He was refunded his money including shipping.I was not aware the gun wasn't a 3" Nickel Python

Response: I almost lost a lot of money buying a fake gun. I believe seller has the responsibility to know what they advertise.

    ____________

hmmmm... "Should have checked"? Checked what? Call and see if the seller is actually selling what is in the auction with 12 pictures?

I'm not a Colt guy but I'm with the buyer. How does the seller put up so many pics.....complete with SN and have the revolver turn out to be a different length and finish than what is advertised? And the sellers response to the F is pretty amusing too: "Call Colt.....I didn't know..."

    Yikes!

It is a 3" Nickel Python in the pic. The serial number in Colts records indicate it has had a barrel changeout. The cost variance of a 6" Python to a real 3" Python is huge..going to the 3" Python. It is still worth more than a standard 6" or 2.5" with the counterfeit barrel on it..[:D] Try and locate just a 3" Colt Python barrel..

Does Colt stamp the gun after a repair/alteration has been accomplished at the factory? Anybody know?

    I know Smith does. Joe

There is a good chance the gun is actually a real 3" Nickel Python. Could be a Colt screw up on records or a custom shop job. Colts records are sometimes incomplete. One thing is for sure.. it is a 3" Nickel gun and a beautiful example.

Actually I know Jerry from his Lima Oh, shows He has some of the finest old colts in the world and travels the country to get them... I have a Beautiful Gold Cup Trophy that came from him He wouldn't list it here because it came from a walk in and he had no history on the gun!!!! If it is a fake Ole Jerry got taken too...I'd buy a gun from the man anytime...I think it is damn rude to leave a F to a guy who already made it right with you... Jerry has a Full time shop just up the road from me!!! He is a stand up guy take my word for it!!!

Take a look at the ejector/cylinder in picture #11 on that fake 3"

    http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=80460523

then look at the ejector/cylinder on this 2 1/2" I just bought in picture #4.

    http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=82834433

I've never seen an original nickel Python that had a blue ejector.

Also, note the blue sites on the fake vs the nickel sites on the real thing.

I don't quite get how the seller had photos of a 3" nickle plated and says he was not aware it was 6" blue, and call Colt before you bid. What the heck was the guy selling? I sure wouldn't have been a happy camper either, and in my view a guy that messes up that badly even if he refunds my bid price, doesn't deserve great feedback. From me it would have been neutral with an explanation he messed up but refunded.

Can someone explain what happend here? I must be slow today. (Yeah, I know, too good a set up line to pass up, but remember I don't play the straight guy, I get the funny lines.)

Colt does indeed mark guns returned to the factory for work! They use a single digit number such as the one shown in the sellers photo, I believe it is the #5 in this case.

The seller said "this gun is unfired and has no turn ring on the cylinder" and went on to quote the guy he bought the gun from as being the original purchaser. The seller also said This gun was produced in 1977 according to the good people at Colt, which kind of insinuates that he contacted Colt about the gun, instead of just looking up the serial number from some source.

When the buyer actually contacted Colt, he found out that the pistol shipped from the factory as a blue 6" barrel gun. So the gun had the barrel replaced or cut and was nickel plated.

What apparently happened is the seller had the 3 inch Python but it was listed in the Colt records as having originally been a 6 inch Python that was blue and not nickel.

The buyer was upset that the seller had sold him a gun that was faked to make it more valuable.

I think the buyer was wrong to leave a "F" negative feedback because the seller may not have known. The seller made it right including returning all shipping costs. What more can you expect from him if you give him the benefit of the doubt. I would have been suspicious because the label was missing and I think both of them should have been also, but unless the seller had already got a letter from Colt (or had called them if they are willing to provide the info on the phone) there is no way to know for sure. But he did what any legitimate dealer would have done and that is to return all money.

Collector 14-I had a nickel Python and it had blued front and rear sights. I think it was original but I never sent for a letter from Colt.

I have another one here that has a #7 below the serial number, where you're seeing that #5, and it hasn't been back to the factory.

I think you're correct that Colt puts a mark, but I'm not convinced that the #5 is signifying that Colt did the work.

I'll buy that. I have a harder time with the ejector though.
