EASTON, Pa. - A man who admitted he beat his girlfriend's 2-year-old son offered an excuse that angered a judge: He said he's not a morning person.
Juan Arreola, 20, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts each of endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and simple assault. Prosecutors said while moving into a new apartment with his girlfriend on June 7, Arreola kicked her son out of the way, then squeezed the toddler's face.
While looking after the boy three days later, he punched the boy twice, prosecutors said. Arreola's girlfriend brought the child to a hospital later that day, where he was diagnosed with bleeding around the brain. Photos show the boy with severe bruising on his face and back.
When Northampton County Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden asked Arreola Friday if that's how he regularly treated 2-year-olds, he replied: "I was working till midnight. I'm not a morning person."
McFadden said she was almost speechless.
"You're going to look at me straight in the face and say 'I'm not a morning person,'?" she asked.
The judge ordered Arreola to undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluations and set sentencing for Dec. 14. The maximum penalty is a state prison term of more than 20 years.
Why do these judges feel they must cure these maniacs and/or child abusers? Why can't they just save everyone time and money and go straight to the long drop and short rope?

its for the money... we all know what would be an appropriate punishment, the man should be beaten to the brink of death. Some may even say he should be executed, But to avoid cruel and unusual punishment I think the ass kicking of a lifetime would set him straight. So what if he has to sit in a wheelchair eating and defecating through straws KICK HIM HARD BOYS!
I have had my ass whooped to point it was black and blue when I was growing up and feel that a good ass whipping is good every once in a while, but there is a fine line between stern punishment and going overboard. A line that should never be crossed, or be damned!0 -

He needs to be put away, but the toddlers parent needs to be looked at as well. He kicked the child out of his way and then squeezed its face? Then she had the idea to let the child stay with him after that?

Gotta disagree with you on this. I have a ton of issues with illegal aliens, which I sort of assume that you assume this guy is -- but being any more prone to child battering than any other scrap of human-shaped fecal matter isn't one of those issues.
We have a wonderful creep named Tony Servizi here in the tri-state region (SE Indiana, SW Ohio, N Kentucky) who is a beady-eyed piece of white trash who has possibly already beaten one baby to the point of brain damage, and recently has been arrested for doing the same to another. He and his entire clan of no-goods hired lawyers the night the first child (the son of his girlfriend, at the time) was taken to the hospital, and managed to evade charges being filed, which the police investigating the newest case are taking a hard look at. I have nothing more against Servizi than I do against anyone else who harms a child -- that's my point. Evil isn't a matter of skin color or nationality. Hell is the ultimate melting pot, and Hell, I pray, is where all such people as this are headed.0
