Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Every LEO in my Division got a newsletter informing us that we have a Big Brother/Big Sister program in our area. The big brothers are for the boys who dont have Father figures. Big sisters are for girls who dont have mothers, but there dont seem to be many girls. I put some thought into it growing up myself my dad died at 33 yrs of age from Diabetes. So I know how important it is to have someone to set positive examples and do stuff with. I had an Uncle who did things with me and he sure set a good example for me. So about 2 Months or so ago I signed up, and got a little brother. His name is Jon and he's 9Yrs old and was a little shy at first, but my wife has already won his heart. Its going to be a true Blessing for me just to have the chance to do things with Jon and try to show him the right way. We spoke with Jon's mother last week for hours, and I ask about taking him out to shoot pump .22 rifles and she's all for it, said she didnt worry when he was in my care. Jon lost his father when he was an infant in a car accident, his mother said she never did want to see anyone or date anyone else. She is a fine working class single mother. Jon has no Uncles on either side, so he's missed out on alot of things already. But my Nephew Austin is 10yrs old and they took right up with one another, so that worked out really good. There already big buddies and it helped Jon to get accustomed to me. We have been squirel hunting after the range of course. Im not sure who like Burger King best,me or him? This is great for me to have such a opportunity to influence a child in a positive way. Im really happy about it, I truly ask for your thoughts and prayers to guide me when Im with Jon. To set good standards, examples and be able to show him the right way to go while having fun. Anyone who has this program in their area should offer some of your spare time to take part in the Program.

    Tried to do that same thinghere at my place 2 years ago,Think i could offer a young fella a few things about life in general.Would been fun for both of us.They told me i was to old .Still burns me up and from what i,ve been told theres not much i can do bout it.hasent stopped me from helpin out at christmas time doing whatever i can.Your good folks for helpin a kid out.Thanks,Paul

    A female friend of mine, from work, has a female "partner" with a daughter and son. The daughter's old enough to be making her own way in the world, but the son's 13. His name's Joe. Joe has been shooting with me for several years and we're both looking forward to the start of firearms deer season, in barely three weeks, now. Sometimes it's a pretty tricky balancing act, trying to teach him what I consider the right way to do things -- his "parents" aren't big on the work ethic thing and are looking forward to getting a good liberal back in the White House so the "poor" in this country will be properly taken care of -- and I don't want to push their buttons to the point they decide I'm more of a troublemaker than a positive influence on the kid. Joe responds as well to example as to simply being told, though, so I just do as I do and he tends to follow. Right now he owns two guns I've built for him (.50 caliber flintlock and a re-stocked Romanian .22 training rifle), and apparently there's been some lively debate in his house since he found out Hillary would love nothing better than take away his right to own them (can't imagine who might have told him that....[}:)]).

    A great experience. The only downside, if you want to call it that, was one of my ex-brother-in-laws wanting to know what Mike's doing hanging out with some kid. This individual thinks everyone is a drug user, a thief, and a pervert-in-waiting, which I think says a lot more about his character (or lack thereof) than about those he suspects of being up to no good. I only throw this in as a sad but necessary caution -- we live in twisted times and there are those who look for the worst in everyone, all around them. But, I've never particularly given a damn what anyone else thinks, up to this point, and I see no point in starting to worry about it now. [;)]
