The decline of hunters
Just found this on another site and thought it would liven up the forum, what do you think? Is this why were losing future replacement hunters? [V]

No. The reason why we're losing future replacement hunters is because families that do not own hunting land have few choices on where to hunt without being over crowded.
All you have there is a kid smoking marijuana. Chances are, he's a good kid too. He's just making a mistake.

sure can't telll me hunter numbers are in decline.
I am in waiting for the third yr in a row for a general season deer permit. elkiholic was 11yrs in waiting for a MZ elk permit. which tells me there are more hunters now than ever before.
Private hunting property is worthless if the State won't or stops issueing hunting permits.

deer love the smell of it i find and they like eating the plants too - so i have been told - lol

I do know that many hunters are getting discouraged in Oregon due to all the regulations and new rules that keep getting added to the hunting laws. Enviormental concerns are taking their toll!
The rules about not using dogs have discouraged hunters that seek bear and cougar. Requirements that you have to pick up all the horse poop when going onto state/federal lands has discrouraged many hunters in areas of Eastern Oregon. A license costs X and then you have to buy expensive tags for anything and everything and then hope you can get one. Its getting interesting, but hunting is down overall I am told.
I would like to see some concrete facts from state to state about the number of tags issued currently vs say 5-10 years ago.0 -
Thye commercialization of hunting is driving a stake thru the heart of hunting. Prices for leases and the gubments grab for hunting dollars is getting plain stoopid. 0 -
Another reason for losing our future hunters is that more and more people are moving to Suburbia, US. That is where our kids are growing up. They can't walk off of the back deck and shoot with Mom or Dad. Outdoor (hunting and fishing) activities are be replaced by soccer, Nintendo, and other Suburbia type stuff. That is the biggest reason. Plus, it is getting more and more expensive to hunt. The cost of my hunting lease has gone up 100% since I moved here 3 years ago. Public land is going away and out of state opprotunities are becoming once-in-a-lifetime investments.

I'm seeing something much more disturbing; an increase in the number of hunters and a dramatic decrease in the quality of sportsman.
However, I don't see any reason to get on the kid in the above picture. I'm sure he is just practicing with his goose call.[;)] Just kidding. As long as he doesn't go into the field or handle a firearm drunk or stoned than the Libertarian in me thinks he has every right to destroy himself.0 -
Here it really depends on how much water we get. Elk tags, always hard to get,have been steady or up. Mainly because ranchers not liking the competition for resources. Deer tags are way down because of the long drought. Some hunt units are down 75% or more. 0 -

Your picture shows a young hunter and nothing to do with their decline. I congratulate him on a nice kill. On the other hand the below picture shows something which is responsible for the decline in young hunters.0 -

The NRA did a survey about 10 years ago, and from this survey they concluded that by 2050 there would be no hunting as we know it today. That was solely based on the current attrition rate and decline of the numbers of those who do hunt now. I have taught Hunter's Education for the State of NY for over 18 years, and over that time frame I have seen the age of those who attended the course increase. The course is designed for the 11 & 12 year old level, but those ages are the few and far between. The average age of sportsmen & women in the field is around the mid 30's. Most of us here are probably older then that. If I recall, the main reasons the NRA survey cited as affecting a persons decision to hunt was the price of a land lease, cost of equipment, public chastising of gun ownership, and no need for the game meat. Quite frankly; the average sportsman of today is being priced out of the hunting game, and the public support of the sport is in rapid decline.[V]

I live in Oregon and quit buying hunting license 7 years ago, to many STUPID game law's and after 5 years of putting in for Elk tag and NOT getting one, I quit, I watched the fish and game people regulate the Deer heads out of Utaha 30 years ago, And now the Stupid game people are doing the same thing here not only to the deer, but the Elk to. WHY CANT WE ALL GET TO GATHER AND STOP PAYING THE GAME PEOPLE FOR MAKING STUPID MISTAKES? 0 -
All the above reasons have merit. The hunters I run into in the midwest seem heads above alot of the people hunting 40 years ago in the area of ethics and respect for all wildlife both game animals and non game. HOWEVER, at a gunshow I go to 3 times a year there used to be a guy who would have a dozen pics of prairie dogs he'd blown apart with a .22-250 YEAH it's a free country but he disgusted halfthe guys at a gunshow so you can imagine how it would play on open minded people who are neither pro or con hunting. It never hurts to use some commen sense..... 0 -
As it did in England, hunting in the US is rapidly becoming a rich mans sport. When I was a kid we could ask to hunt rabbits or squirrels on almost any farm and recieve permission. Now that same land wants a trespass fee to hunt there. We are fortunate in the west to have much public land available to hunt on, but we are seeing increasing numbers of hunters on that land. 0 -

+10 The only thing holding me from being a avid hunter now is the rediculous lease fees you have to pay in Texas. Seems like there is no public land to roam around on.
I can fly to Oregon and elk hunt with my brother for what it costs to hunt right here in the state I live in.0 -
Here, hunting = big business. Not like it used to be. Lease land goes to those that can afford the expense. If you don't own enough land to manage yourself, you are SOL. Plus, the owners around you set up stands on trail leading into you land. We still have some that shoot every deer they see, doe, buck, don't matter. Some clubs lease an area and within a few years give it up because there aren't any deer left.
The last club I was in, 1992, cost $300 plus 5 work days. 3000 acres, with 40+ members. Out of those, there were at least 10-20 there every day! Doe tags were issued, but many does left the area not tagged or logged in. I hunted about 10 times that season, saw one old grey haired buck with a thumb sized horn on one side. Decided I was wasteing my money and time.

Well I started hunting last year for the first time, age 27. Didn't see a damned thing, though everyone with me at least got a shot off. 0 -
hunting is in trouble in america for a few reasons....
land to hunt on is getting scarce
anti-gun sentiment means fewer shooters who are good people
PETA makes every kid think they are a cruel evil murderer if they hunt
huge private property owners denying hunters access in violation of the law (harrison ford)0
