I honestly think that thse narco-gangs are the real threat, not terrorists. People, no matter how stupid or indoctrinated, get tired of blowing themselves up after a while, but since when do people get tired of making money?

I grew up in LA at just the right time to see the rise of the gangs that now pollute every city in our nation -- and many a rural area as well. Anywhere there are poor, uneducated people with few if any skills to make an honest living, little or no respect for themselves or others, and apologists who seem to believe that the need to focus on the problems of poverty, poor education, broken homes (or homes that never were), as root causes of crime, requires us to ignore the reality that we need prisons and punishment until long-term solutions can kick in -- and regardless of the skin color of the thugs involved -- we'll have gangs. Modern communications, by itself, makes it impossible to really get away from the problems of the city, no matter how far into the sticks we try to go.
When I was a kid, before hitting my teens, my block was a place kids played on the streets, parents knew one another, no one worried or considered it cause for criminal charges of neglect if the kids were out of sight for more than a second or two, and the only shootings in the area were when my dad and a couple of his friends staged BB gun matches to "indoctrinate" the neighborhood youth (with their parents' approval) in the utterly un-PC concept of responsibly owning and using guns [:D]. By the time I left, when I was 28, the neighborhood I'd grown up in was in the middle of a war zone. My wake-up call that times had changed was when, in my first year of middle school, I had the living s--- kicked out of me by three Mexican kids I'd gone to school with since kindergarten. They did this to prove to the gang they were joining that their priorities were in order. My brother's wake-up call involved some dozen Samoans and a high school principal who blamed his beating on the "racist" attitude he'd inherited from my mom and dad. When they called the criminals "gang members" the principal informed them that calling a bunch of boys who just happened to be from the same neighborhood and ethnic background a gang, was racist, and that that attitude was the "obvious" provocation for my brother being attacked.
Happily, the same tolerant principal died of a stroke brought on by the stress of his job, several years later. Guess defending the indefensible got to be too much for him.
I'm a tolerant person -- too tolerant, in many persons' eyes. I've been threatened twice with cross-burnings if I didn't keep my mouth shut, to which I've responded that my tolerance doesn't extend to allowing the burners of crosses on my property to continue breathing, and that I have the means to back up my words. Much of my tolerance stems from having seen firsthand what happens when decent people can't see past their differences (skin color, religion, take your pick of the reasons people hate one another). The key word, though, is "decent". Gangbangers aren't. I pity the small children whose lives are so crappy that a future as a thug is as inevitable as it is, obviously, somehow appealing -- but, at some point in the process of growing from small children who could be saved to monsters who kill without remorse, in my opinion they lose the privilege, right, whatever you want to call it, of being considered human. I despise them worse than I do the terrorists who have attacked and will continue to attack this country and its people. Even as I advocate wiping them off the face of the earth when their actions or intentions become too dangerous to tolerate, I can acknowledge (not respect, not salute, just acknowledge) that terrorists believe in what they're doing. In their sick way they're trying to accomplish something that, to them, would be good. Gangbangers can't even claim that.0
