Toddler Dies After Hooters Mom Forgets Child in Hot Car

PHOENIX - A 17-month-old boy left unattended inside a hot car for at least seven hours in a north Phoenix Hooters restaurant parking lot was found dead Tuesday afternoon.
FOX 10 Phoenix reports the baby's mother had planned to drop the child off at childcare before heading to work at a restaurant near Bell Road and Interstate 17.
Instead, authorities say the mother went to work with the child still inside the car.
Police say the mother returned to her car after work and discovered the child. People in the parking lot at the restaurant ran to help when they heard the mother scream and a passerby called 911.
Firefighters were unable to revive the child and pronounced the boy dead at 5:15 p.m.
Police spokesman Sgt. Joel Tranter said, "(The boy's mother) was visibly upset. She forgot the child was in the car until she unlocked it."
Temperatures in the Phoenix area reached 90 degrees Tuesday afternoon, but inside the car the heat scorched well over the century mark.
"It makes me sick to my stomach. I don't believe it was an accident," said Michelle Fritz, 33, of Phoenix who was among a crowd of a dozen people outside the area. "I don't believe you can honestly forget you have a child in the back of your car," she told the Arizona Republic.
The baby was in a car seat in the backseat of a Honda Civic, which had very dark tinted windows. Officials believe that made him unnoticable to people going in and out of the restaurant and a car wash next door, the Republic reported.
It's unknown if the mother will face any charges in the child's death. Tranter said situations like this are handled "on a case-by-case basis."
So far, there have been no arrests.

Give mommy three years in prison. Every day in which the sun shines, cuff her up and set her out in a SUV in the parking lot with the windows rolled up. Let her sit there for ten minutes and see what it feels like, then back inside the jail for her.0 -

The mother of a 17-month-old boy who died Tuesday after being left in a parked car outside a Hooters restaurant was arrested in suspicion of negligent homicide, a class 4 felony, according to Phoenix spokesman Sgt. Joel Tranter.
Ashly Duchene, 22 , was arrested last night and was being held as of Wednesday morning. She was a waitress at the Hooters restaurant on 29th Avenue and Bell Road, where she left the child in the car parked in a nearby parking lot before her morning shift.
Tranter said interviews with family members and close friends revealed that Duchene was an unhappy mother. Those close to Duchene said she wanted her freedom and did not make the child a priority at all, Tranter said.
Duchene told police she forgot to leave the baby at childcare when she reported for her 10 a.m. shift. She found the baby in the car after she clocked out at 5 p.m, Tranter said people in the parking lot at the restaurant ran to help when they heard the mother's screams and a passerby called 911on Tuesday.
Neither the civilians nor firefighters were able to revive the child who was pronounced dead about 5:15 p.m. The baby was in a car seat in the backseat of the Honda Civic, which had extremely dark tinted windows. Officials theorized that made him invisible to people going in and out of the restaurant and a car wash next door.
The car was parked in the front of the lot on Bell Road and about 20 feet from the Hooters patio seating area. Melanie Gulmetti,#61492; regional marketing manager for all Hooters restaurants in Arizona, said the company was deeply saddened by the tragedy and was cooperating with authorities.
"Our hearts go out to the mother and family," she said. Gulmetti also said Duchene had been a waitress at Hooters for 2 ? years and was very well-liked among coworkers.
The Hooters restaurant was set to reopen on Thursday. Temperatures hit near 90 degrees Tuesday but the inside car reached more than 100 degrees, Tranter said.
"It makes me sick to my stomach. I don't believe it was an accident,'' said Michelle Fritz, 33, of Phoenix who was among a crowd of a dozen people outside the area Tuesday. "I don't believe you can honestly forget you have a child in the back of your car."
Another woman, Mitzi Miller, 55, of Phoenix, called the death "a tragedy because the girl was working and she's probably overtired. I bet she thought she already dropped the baby off." `'It's a shame for a mother to have to go through something like that.''
Three years ago, a Mesa mother left her 4-month-old in a minivan parked in the parking lot of her Ahwatukee workplace after she forgot to drop the child at day care. The baby died at a hospital. The mother was never charged.0 -

On August 23, assistant principal Brenda Nesselroad-Slaby drove to Glen Este Middle School for a day of work, forgetting that her two-year-old daughter Cecilia was inside the family SUV. Temperatures on that August Thursday reached nearly 100-degrees outside, with temperatures inside the car undoubtedly higher.
The death of two-year-old Cecilia sparked controversy locally and across the country, as Clermont County Prosecutor Don White chose not to charge Slaby in connection with her daughter's death; the incident was ruled an accident. The subject continues to be debated around the Tri-State.0 -
It's a tragedy, but I still cannot fathom how anybody can leave a kid in a car, let alone for 7 freaking hours! How does one forget that they are a parent?
You mean to tell me that at some point during Mom's day of slinging beers and burgers, she didn't have that nagging feeling that she had forgotten SOMETHING?

This hit close to home because I live 30 miles from Cincinnati, and work in a SE Indiana school district. In the nearly 13 years I've lived here, I have heard, time and again, bitter criticism of lower-income families, and single moms, who "neglect" their children -- sending them to school underfed, poorly dressed, tired -- and I have heard the question asked, "Why are these people allowed to breed?"
Nesselroad-Slaby not only forgot her child in the back seat of her car, she'd done the same thing before -- maybe not actually forgot, but left the kid unattended, strapped in a car seat, for periods of time ranging from several minutes to a quarter of an hour. She had been warned about this habit by her superiors. On the day her daughter died, this upper-class mother not only forgot her -- she forgot her several times, in the course of returning to her SUV to fetch donuts she'd picked up for a staff meeting.
She apologized, at the time her daughter was found dead, for the possible disruption she might have caused her co-workers. I can put this down to shock -- people say stupid stuff under stress -- but it doesn't help her overall case.
To date, many of the same people who question the fitness of the poor to breed and raise children, have defended Nesselroad-Slaby on the grounds of the enormous pressure a job like hers places on a person. Apparently, the poor are neither subject to nor entitled to claim stress in their lives.
It has been a subject of some only half-joking debate, as to whether the leniency shown Nesselroad-Slaby would have been extended if, in addition to leaving her daughter to die, she had forgotten to bring the donuts in.0
