Record Number of Americans With Health Insurance
every single headline in the media is about the record number of americans without health insurance. however, when you look at the figures a few things become obvious. the number of uninsured americans increased LESS than the population of the country increased. therefore the number of uninsured went up simply because the population of the country went up. however, it is noted that a RECORD number of americans HAVE insurance as well.
BUT....why isnt that the headline in the media ?

Because there is a Republican in the White House, and the media desire that situation to change.
The percentage of Americans that own their own homes and have health insurance has increased in the past 6 years. What is reported is, as you point out that the raw numbers of uninsured has increase (how many are illegal?) and that the number of foreclosures has increased.
If you will remember, the homeless crisis was a crisis under Reagan and Bush I. It went away under Clinton, and magically returned under Bush II.0 -

The headline should rightfully be about the Americans WITHOUT health insurance. It is still galling to me that the supposed most advanced country on earth still cannot figure out a way to make basic health care affordable to ALL the population. My insurance runs about $1200 per month!! And I still pay out the wazoo for my part of the bill. Forget all the other "stuff" wrong with America. This is what will bring us down to a nation of the haves and have nots. When the common working man has to worry if a single catastrophic injury or disease to one of his family members will put them in the poor house, something is wrong and something needs to be done about it.

Before government got involved with health care the price was reasonable and you were able to get the service you wanted to pay for. Now state governments are telling insurance companies that they cannot discriminate for any reason (pre-existing conditions included) and many are insisting upon minimum level of care, etc.
Return the entire industry to the individual. Remove the three layers of bureaucracy from the billing process. Wean the country from having physicals and normal office visits being an insurance event. Doctors do not have to compete for your business because their services are a commodity whose value is artificially inflated by government funding, ensuring a high demand.
I have a $ 5,000.00 deductible policy that is very reasonably priced, and would recommend that type of policy to everyone. It is health insurance that is used in the same manner that auto insurance is used. I do not use either for scheduled maintenance.0 -
I dont have health insurance and I am doing fine. I still get health care at affordable prices, in fact its often cheaper without health insurance.
The cost of health care and health insurance would come down drastically if the government would STAY OUT of the market and KEEP OUT the lawyers and crooks who cheat the system (illegal aliens) and raise prices for everyone.
The best way to lower prices is to have a real FREE MARKET system.
The thing to remember though is that health care is YOUR responsibilty, not the government. Dont make me pay for your health care.0 -

If you break down the Census report about the un-insured it shows that 45% that don't have insurance are NOT U.S. citizens, around 29% are young adults age 18-24 who either choose not to pay for insurance (I'm young and don't need it) or are just getting started on their own after leaving the nest. That accounts for 74% of the un-insured. 0 -

When you are young your medical bills tend to be small, yet you are paying the same premiums as us old farts. We were notified by our health care provider earlier this year that on 01 July, premiums were going up 5% across the board (HMO, PPO, POS). Last year the premiums increased by nearly 11%. As of 01 January my employee's cafeteria plan contribution will increase to $900 per month, up $100 from the current $800 monthly contribution. If I were young and single I think that I'd also try my luck and just take that $11K in health insurance as cash, put the maximum into my 401K and then invest the rest.0 -
A few more reasons for health care being so expensive are.
No common sense... The younger generations don't seem to know how to take care of themselves. Basic first aide and minor illness care is over their head so they run to the doctor.
NO tollerance... similar to above. Many minor illneses just take time to get over. More time than many are willing to tolerate. Again they run to the doctor who's recourse is usually to med the patients to take his mind off the illness til it runs it's course.
Foolishness....We all did stupid and potentially injurous things when we were young but it seems todays generations seek this stuff out.I speak of the Extreme sports where in many cases injury is not only probable but guaranteed. And since there is little cost to the injured because insurance pays for those injuries they don't think twice about doing it again.
All this helps to drive up the demand and cost of health services and insurance.0 -

I agree with some of what you say. But do you have a kid in school? In our school district, they have 2 unexcused absences a year. When I was in school, you woke up vomiting, you stayed home and got better. Not today. Unless you bring a note in FROM THE DOCTOR, that is an unexcused absence. Snotty nose and low grade fever? Tylenol and rest for a day right? Not now. Gotta have a doctor's note to get the absence excused. ON days you have unexcused absences, the work cannot be made up. So the freaking schools force your hand on some of this crap. You know the school mantra for the 21st century: ZERO TOLERANCE! As far as tolerance, most businesses today won't pay for you to stay home for a day or two to get over whatever it is you have. So you run to the doc hoping for a miracle or quick cure so you can go back to drawing a pay check. About the same deal as the school system puts you in. As far as extreme sports, when I was growing up in the 60's, there wasn't a jump I wouldn't make on my bike. And not one of today's fancy bikes with shocks and all that crap. Big sissy bar and banana seat! Looks to me that is more dangerous than what today's kids are doing.0 -

i dont oppose malpractice lawsuits. i oppose FRIVILOUS malpractice lawsuits, which most of them are. i also support tort reform and a system that would make the losing party pay for all legal fees. its time to stop the snakes and schmucks.
i also support caps on punitive damage awards.
if the lawyerssnakes got out of the health care industry costs would be lowered by about 50%.0 -
Dog, then you don't beleive in a free market economy. If they are frivolous, then a jury will say so, and the court will award sanctions against the party that filed or the attorney if it's really egregious. Shouldn't a jury decide? Shouldn't a jury decide whether or not someone's injuries are worth pennies or millions? 0 -
sure. but the losing side should pay for both attornies fees, thereby cutting down the frivilous lawsuits and forcing companies to pay for extortion attempts by lawyers and thereby raising health care costs for everyone.
