Semi splits in two.

This happened near here yesterday. A Semi hauling grain broke in two spilling it's load of corn on hwy65 just north of Humeston, IA. Traffic had to be rerouted for over 3hrs for the clean-up. Here are some photos that were taken by Humestons Fire Chief.

    If that happened around here, the moonshiners would have cleaned it up in about 15 min. The crows would finish off what they couldn't shovel up.

    Probably an older and overloaded trailer. Those trailers get ALOT of hard use and exposure to the elements. Not to mention salted roads etc.
    Larger trucking companies "retire" (IE: sell) trailers after only about 5 years use. By then they are mostly worn out.
    Smaller companies/independants buy/use them.
    Grain haulers fit in this catagory. And because they tend to run fairly locally, are notorious for overloading and dodging the scales.(IF any in the area).

    Yeah. What happened to the DOT Regs that say you have be read/speak ENGLISH to drive a Class A in the U.S.?
    Probably went the same way as no convicted felons.
    It's becomeing pretty interesting how some laws are enforced and others not.

    'Bout 10-12 years ago there was a semi that went off an overpass south edge of town, he was carrying lab mice.[:0][B)] Wish there was some pics of that.

    Ive seen alot of things happen over the yrs, but that takes the cake.

    I've hauled bulk corn like that in a standard 53' dry box, and it ain't fun. It's very heavy and shifts drastically going down the road. All it takes is one time grabbing the brakes too hard, and everything shifts forward. Try explaining that one at the scale house!

    Many years ago I drove trucks i the midwest, mostly grain. A trailer like that half full of corn is right at the legal limits for weight. You can make more money by filling it tothe top and getting downthe road, usually at well over twice the weight limit. As we were "locals" we knew when the scales were open and dodged them without any real efforts. Buddy got caught at a truck stop, he was at 148,000 pounds of corn. The way they treated him, you'd think he hard killed the governors favorite daughter. The judge was sort of harsh with him too.
    If you ever lived in the upper midwest and saw the damage a overload can do to a road, you'd understand all that. Makes a heck of a mess of a road.

    Yup. my guess would be a little on the heavy side.

    I have seen trailers go like that more than once!

    Caused from overweight, load centered in the middle of the trailer, and old ill mantained equipment!

    I worked with the trucking industry here for several years, hauling mineral concentrates, such as lead/zinc/copper, etc. I loaded the trucks, around the clock and you wouldn't believe the weights these guys would haul..at a high rate of speed. Cleaned up several messes too.[;)]
    Some of the chemicals hauled into the mills were pretty wicked, and spread down the road at times also..I'd take corn anyday.

    We saw one last Thursday on Rt81 in Md that bent in two. There was apparently a fire in the center of it as smoke was coming from it.
