Athens, OH: Update
I got a lead on a job in Athens, OH. So, anybody know anything about the area?
At this point in my career I actually have very little control over where I end up, and this job description seems to have been written for me. I'm going to hate leaving the northwest.
Still, anyone know anything about the area?
UPDATE
I had a phone interview for the position today. I'm one of two contenders for the position.
BUT there's a hitch: the job originally was advertised as a one-to-two year gig in Ohio, but now is a seven-month gig in Ohio with an optional move to Ontario for another five to seventeen months. The move is 'optional' and I might be willing to do it (because it's relatively short-term), but in reality, if I decide that I don't want to go to Ontario and am honest about it, I probably will not get the position. I'm inclined to be honest about my intentions, whatever I decide.
Again, the job description looks like it was written for me and probably would help me advance my career. So do your best and try to talk me into or out of making this leap.....assuming I am offered the job.
Thanks in advance.

I live in Columbus spurgemaster. Athens is a short drive away. Nice college town. I'll do some looking about for ya and give ya some info this weekend. 0 -
My sister goes to Ohio University in Athens. She seems to like it, although she tells me that Athens county is one of the poorest in Ohio (in terms of average income). 0 -

Job competition in my field is pretty stiff. So cross your thumbs for me and if I move in we'll find a place to go shoot some guns.0 -
Spurgemastur, you have mail,[:D] Loko[8D] 0 -
I think the surrounding area is a dump. Get out into the country and it is like something out of the poorest reaches of Appalachia. It is known for a lot of rockslides too.
The town itself is ok though.0 -
I am about 30 minutes from athens. Very nice place and growing fast. have a great holloween party at the college every year. town is quaint, lots of hills and brick streets. only an hour from columbus or 1/2 hr. to parkersburg WV or Marietta OH (ohio's oldest town). Has a river that runs in front of a very pretty campus. 0 -

None of the posts on this thread make me want to run out and buy a Greyhound ticket to that "neck of the Woods".[;)][:D][:D]0 -

I've not been offered the job, yet. Phone interview was today. I'm one of two remaining contestants for the position. I'll find out in a couple of weeks if its been offered to me.
I'm in academia (for now). This is a post-doctoral fellowship in one of the biological sciences.0 -

Good luck! Biological Science jobs are tough to get in to, but once in the door it is a who you know thing and what you did thing. Any experience you can get is great. Seems like of late there have been considerable more positions in the south. Keep your feet in the door and hang in there - it will come along. I have been a wildlife biologist for almost 30 years and have seen lots of new professionals give up and go to other things when they got discouraged in the job market.0 -

Thanks, TX. I'm just finishing my Ph.D and am going to have to start thinking seriously about the next career move really soon. For now, I'm thinking the post-doc fellowships still keep all the doors open; I'm not sure I'm cut out for a life of academia, but I don't want to rule that out just yet. Other options are to go into government service (helluva bureaucracy, from everything I've heard), private sector jobs (where you're either a corporate lackey or a hired environmentalist), or maybe I'll just put my statistical skills to work developing a quantitative approach to the stock market[:D][:D]0 -
Nothing wrong with what you are doing. If you aren't really sure what field you want to be "special" in, not a bad way to find out. Other than during graduate school, i have always worked in either the private sector or corporate. I came from a long line of teachers, but guess my sister will have to carry that one on. The teaching i did in college was enough for me.
You really don't have to sell out to work in the corporate sector. The "you sold out" bit usually comes from academia. I guess most can't believe you can be honest and think for yourself and get paid for it with corporate dollars. I've been called almost everything - "biostitute", "dark side", etc. But when you get right down to it, the proof is in the pudding and data doesn't lie. Only you can take your integrity away....0 -

Fair enough.....the "corporate lackey" comment was out of line. I have a friend who's doing that right now, and I know he's kept his integrity.
With respect to the corporate jobs, I don't know much about them, but haven't heard of any that sound really interesting to me.0 -
I didn't take your comment as a slam. Just wanted to challenge you to think of a way to provide your intelligence and experience to make something better. We have to sell what we do, because corporations are all about money. Most corporations want to be right. I point them in that direction and then take them there and show them the benefits. 0 -
better see if they mean Ontario, Canada, or Ontario, Ohio. There's a small town northeast fo Columbus, just off 71, called Ontario. It's right next to Mansfield. Not a bad town. Actually, that area has the lowest cost of living in Ohio. Very affordable houses, etc. It would not be a bad place to live/work. 0
