new years superstition

i can remember my aunt at new years eve getting a can of kippered herring and a loaf of bread and placing them on the table. she would also place a penny on the window sill. she claimed if you did that you would never go hungry or be broke. i know she always used a certain type of bread but i cant remember what type. anyone ever heard of this or know what type of bread is to be placed on the table

    We always ate Black Eyed Peas on New Years Day for good luck.

    My mom always cooks cabbage, ham hocks and black-eyed peas on New Years. She also puts coins in the cabbage. If you scoop out a coin with your cabbage, it's supposed to be good luck.
    I think it's an Appalachian thing, probably derived from Scots-Irish ancestors.

    I've always have blackeyed peas, and the inlaws always have cornbeef and cabage. I usually have lunch at one family and dinner at the other. Combine that with some hearty drinking the night before and you can image how it smells under the covers on the night of the 1st.

    Tradition (superstition?) in my family has always been to have sauerkraut and pork for New Years Day eats.

    yankees is sauerkraut and pork, southerners is black eyed peas and greens. greens are supposed to represent paper money in the new year, and peas, coins.
