Giant yellow rings....pics
My mother has some gigantic rings....and I have always said she had to give me "dibs" on buying any of them if she sold them. Well, she brought a couple to me this morning. I haven't a clue what something like this sells for. She won't give me a price....but the triangle one is over $500 is scrap gold weight alone. The rectangle is a bright yellow citrine and she says the other is a topaz...but it is very orange-ish in color so it is an odd color for a topaz. Just what is a fair price to give your MOTHER for something like these?

Are you sure? The triangle looks like Madeira Citrine (sought after) The rectangle/octagon looks like Champagne Imperial Topaz (very sought after)
How many grams and what Karat is the triangle shaped?0 -
Its not that I want these things for the "huge ring" factor of them....its that they are one of the things everyone always remembers my mother for. Everyone who has ever known my mom has these huge gaudy rings in their mind when they think of her. For her to part with them isn't something I want to happen.
She doesn't wear them any longer and says she never goes anywhere....so she is going to sell them. I know she will pretty much give them to me if I ask....but I would rather give her a fair price for them. There are a couple that I really want.....but she isn't parting with them.0 -

I have no idea what type stones these are. The triangle ring is a little larger than a dime (the orange stone alone) and the rectangle is a faint, yellow color. I would rather see her get the money she wants out of them than to pull "I should get them just because you gave birth to me." If I can't find a way to pay for them I will just have to see if I can save up to be better prepared for when she sells her emerald. (I will freak out if I miss that one.) 0 -

reloader....we do take her out. My brother even buys broadway series tickets each season. She just doesn't wear them any more. I quit coloring my hair....it doesn't mean my daughter can have my hats.
People change and she just doesn't want these anylonger. These aren't two she wore very often. She may need the money for something that she doesn't want to have to explain. You can't take the dignity out of a person by "babysitting" them when you feel like it. If I say..."mother, you know I want those rings and you should give them to me." then I am a complete ass. If I say..."now mother, you put your pretty little rings on and lets go see a movie." that isn't very nice either is it.
How about I just let her do what she wants to with her things without putting any guilt on her and without limiting what she gets for her jewelry by what I can afford?0 -

List them on an appropriate site with an unreasonably high reserve (like hundreds of thousands of dollars). The bidders will give you an idea of what they're worth.0 -

I want to know if these are some type of special stones? Our area is running a little thin on jewelers you can just ask a question. I have a blue stone that I wanted to know if it was aquamarine or blue topaz and I have been told both by people who I thought knew a thing or two about jewelry.0 -
One of the most common ways to help identify a stone is a refractive index test (RI)
It's hard to explain in a thread, but here goes..
Aquamarine is 1.568-1.581 RI
Blue Topaz is 1.606-1.627 RI
Citrine is 1.535-1.554 RI
You can buy a cheap Jemeter digital model like this for around $200
(see pic below)
If the RI is too close/inconclusive you usually have to result to a specific gravity test which involves some dangerous liquid chemicals0 -
"refractive index" is a measure of what angle that light will or won't bounce off of the surface of some transparent material.
for example, if you take an ordinary peice of glass, you can see through it. if you try looking at it at an angle, you see a reflection instead. the exact angle where you start seeing a reflection is the "refractive index".
so, different transparent materials have different refractive indexes. in this case, you're looking at gems.
you can do that with liquids too. it's a very common analytical technique in chemistry.0 -

I just haven't delt with any stones like these before....there is such a wide variety in prices on these things. I haven't heard much about where these types of stones come from.
Is is true that tanzanite is being mined in the last mine that it can be found? If that is the case are we to all grab up tanzanite?0 -

You can buy tanzanite jewelry on any Carribean cruise. It's everywhere. I got my wife a nice ring in Key West. It was listed at $3,500 and we haggled, moaned, and just hung out with the store manager waiting him out. We walked out with one with diamonds circling the tanzanite stone for $600.
Lot of markup in the jewelry business.
Take it to a reputable jewler for an appraisal.0 -

Tanzanite is one of the hottest gems in the world right now and is also the most easily abused or faked stone.
It's real name is Zoisite and it's a dull brown when mined (heat treated to turn color) from the only place on earth "Tanzania" Tiffiny jewelers was the first to market this trichoic stone. Probably 40% of tanzanite on the market is synthetic.
The usual markup for a retail jeweler is called triple key (3-4 times cost)0
