Shotgun for the ol' man
He doesn't hunt birds, just deer in Illinois, so I am looking for a good slug gun. Any recommendations for a great shotgun for deer hunting?
It will be a early Christmas present[:D]

I would go with the Remington 870 as well. You might want to consider it in 20ga with a fully rifled barrel...lighter recoil but the deer wont know the difference between the 12ga slug or the 20ga slug...dead is dead. 0 -
Ditto on the 870 with slug barrel. 0 -

That looks good, thanks. I found this one, price is up there but I think he would like it a lot. He hunts with a bow but last year wanted to use my Mossberg 500. I had put a knoxx sidewinder kit on it and ruined the tube that hold the rounds so know it a mossberg 500 with a ten round drum. This can't be taken out and used for hunting in Illinois shotgun season. [:)]

Sounds like the 870 is the way to go. Appreciate all the input. 0 -
870 is definately the way to go 0 -
if he doesnt hunt birds, he doesnt need a fast second shot. forget the pumps. get a plain slug single shot break action like it was suggested. it will save you money so you can spend it on ammo and a scope instead.[;)] 0 -
Another vote for the Remington 870 with rifled slug barrel. My sons and I have been hunting Illinois Whitetail with them for years. 0 -
Aright tomorrow I am going to a couple gun stores to find one. Will post pics when I get it. Not that you haven't seen one before[:)] If dad doesn't like it...................I will have a new shotgun. O WELL[:D]
Thanks all0 -
How about this nice 10 ga.[:)] for Pop [8D]it will save him money[;)] on ammo and meet his hunting needs[B)]

just remember, a game warden will never ask to check your plug on a single shot! good luck shopping. 0 -
My state only has 3 rifle counties the rest are shot gun only. So everyone who hunts deer in my state has a slug gun. We also have a state qualification for hunting on state land. So you see what everyone is shooting and how they shoot. I say again if he wants a accurate slug gun the best slug gun for the money is H&R Ultra Slugger.

You know, I've been "pulled over" by game wardens many times while bird hunting. I've never been asked to show the plug, just been asked if I have a plug in it.0 -
Who plugs a deer gun? 0 -
i agree with the quality of the 870 but might recommend either the 1187 or 1100. basically the same gun only semi auto. you can get a rifeled barrel which will be more acurate at longer ranges, but i have no trouble just using a rifeled choke in my 1100 with open sites. depends on how he likes to hunt!! 0 -
Mossberg 835 with scoped slug barrel.
