What happened to .480 Ruger?

Sorry to interrupt with a gun-related question, but where did it go?
Did it go the way that the .327 Federal magnum is going to go in a couple years?

It amazes me that so many "new" calibers are created to fill perceived gaps (not necessarily calling out .45 GAP here, but whatever). Is .17hm2 still around? I guess we'll see whether the .327 is just another fart in the wind.

    The problem with the .480 was that it was not a 500, people are only looking for the biggest and the baddest, or they want a proven design, they are not looking for something that is rated as second best, especally when it can't do anything that a .44 mag can do.

    I think it disapeared for several reasons.

    As stated above, the market was saturated with similar catridges. Also I think there were problems with some Ruger revolvers and sticking cases.

    I know Ruger has pretty much abandoned this round.

    I never understood the purpose in the first place. The .454 will do everything it will do & more plus you can use .45 LC as well. They said it had less recoil but there are milder loads for the .454.
    It always seemed to be a solution in search of a problem.

    Doug, I think you're right. Most all new cartridges being offered will be phased out. I wouldn't mind seeing the .204 stay though. I don't buy a new cartridge for several years just to see if it will hang on or not.

    The only one that has overcome is .17HMR, I think that is here to stay, but the .17HM2 based on the long rifle is dead.

    thats very true but here is another way to look at it a mini van works just fine to so then why do people buy bmw's or other luxery cars[?][?]

    It would outpace and WAY outperform the 454 if you are a handloader. I had one and loved it. Sold it because I needed the money. Now I'm jonesing for a 460. I think it is here to stay. Hard to find a legitimte 200 yard hunting round from a handgun!

    I have a 480 and 204 love both of them but the 480 is hard to find rounds for unless you reload which I do not yet [}:)][:D]
    the 204 is said to be a hell of a varm. round I have not got to hunt with mine yet but its fun to shoot.

    I agree with the yuppie short magnums but that .204 Ruger is slicker than snot on a door knob

    in the war of mine is bigger than yours, there are to many .50 caliber firearms out there, not to mention the fact that there are other rounds out there that do the job better (.460, 454 just to name a few)

    I have a .480 and I really like it. I killed two deer with it this year. I have shot a Taurus .454 but not the big Smiths. But I have heard what punishers they are. With a red dot sight and Hogue grips, the .480 is a pleasure to shoot. I brought out my S&W 657 and shot it with the .480 and there was very little noticable recoil difference. I have bought a few hundred .480 cases here on GB and Speer still makes bullets in .475 cal. so I should be good for ammo even if factory ammo disappears. Can I shoot 45 Long Colt through it?
    No, but if I wanted to shoot 45 Long Colt, I'd buy a gun chambered in 45 Long Colt.

    If you own a Ruger .480 Alaskan I would suggest holding on to it, they're skyrocketing in price.
