Massachusetts Proposal Would Outlaw Spanking
Tuesday , November 27, 2007
Kids out of line? Spanking might not be an option in Massachusetts if a proposal takes hold in the state legislature.
The proposal, submitted by a nurse, would ban corporal punishment, including spanking, in all cases for children under 18 unless it is to save them from danger. Parents would face charges of abuse or neglect, according to The Boston Herald.
A hearing and debate is scheduled in the State House on the measure Wednesday, the paper reports.
Democratic state Rep. Jay Kaufman introduced the measure on behalf of the nurse, but isn't taking a position on it.
"He does recognize and understand the concern many would have on legislating parental rights," said Sean Fitzgerald, Kaufman's chief of staff, the Herald reports. "But the problem is the boundary is often overstepped. The right to hit should never be the right to hurt."

What do you expect from "Teddy",......one of my favorite folks![}:)]
I think he belongs in prison myself, for murder.
He reminds me of a squashed toad,.......therefore my favorite name, "Toady".0 -
It's against the rules for Illinois foster parents to spank. 0 -
ain't against my rules[;)] 0 -
So now a kid in Mass. gets a spanking and winds up in foster care when mom or dad go to jail. [xx(] Yep, this brilliant idea can't miss. 0 -

Good God!
This country is ridiculous with its "let's protect the kids from everything!" Feels good, huh?
No wonder we are raising a generation of whining, weak, undisciplined, entitled punks.
Next those convicted of spanking will have to register as "Child Offenders" for spanking a kid.

I don't think so, I think most conservatives just want parents to "raise" their children and not leave it to the teachers, citizens and police to do it because they won't. In fact, it looks like the liberals (who don't want their children disciplined) don't want anyone else to discipline theirs either so no one can tell the difference in how a belief system affects the final product.[;)]0 -

I'm a Liberal. (Well, except when it comes to guns of course.)
I don't have kids; but if I did and a spanking was deserved, then a spanking would be delivered.0 -

Then don't tell you friends, because those two differences are enough to get you kicked out of their club![:D]0 -

Well my excuse will be "they were in danger of being a Liberal when they grow up".0 -
I don't ever remember being spanked.[:D] The nuns used a ruler and Mom used a peach tree limb (switch).[B)] Spanking would just get the parent a sore hand unless a belt is used.
Corporal punishment is so much more humane than chemical punishment and physiological manipulation/abuse.0 -

+1 and it will be another reason to relieve individuals of their right to own a firearm![:0]0 -
I was spanked as a child. It was never abusive or overdone, just enough to get the point across. I likely would have spanked my son if the need had arisen but all that was needed was a firm voice. In my mind it proves a couple things: Not all spanking is abusive and children who are spanked do not necessarily turn into abusive parents or have other sociological problems.
The key is to realizing that spanking does not work for everyone. Some kids just laugh it off or get vengefull and it has little effect.0 -

It does work if started early enough.
Heck no, you can't let a kid be a brat, and then decide to spank a male child when he is 10 or 12 for the first time.
It worked on me, and was used early as was necessary.
The result of the waiting, is what I deal with now. My fiance is a wonderful woman, but does not like conflict, and let her brat son get away for far too long.
Now he is almost 14, and too big for her to handle,.......I can't touch him, as he is not my son, and he already threatened to call the police on her, and me, if I ever laid a hand on him.
The 10/22 I sold here recently was his Christmas present from me last year. It is gone now, and so is he.
I will not be threatened by a punk that I was paying bills for![xx(]0 -
I've never raised a hand to any of my children. Just couldn't do it. Not because I think I'm better than anyone else, and I don't judge. I just could never reconcile to myself that the lessons corporal punishment taught a child are 1.) physical assault is an acceptable adult response to frustration, and 2.) the bigger person has the right to inflict pain on the smaller person as a means of getting their way. That being said, I still feel we've managed to raise 3 reasonably well-behaved, polite, somewhat responsible, moral and decent pre-teen & teenagers. I know there are parents who use the well-timed swat on the bottom in an effective manner along with groundings, loss of privileges, etc., but I would never advocate spanking in a public forum, mainly because there are those lazy parents out there who you can tell "spanking is okay," and they take that as carte blanche and use the spanking as their only discipline tool, then when the spank is no longer effective, it gets jacked up to using implements, and then to a slap, then a slap to a punch, and so on....
That being said, I still think it is extremely intrusive for the government to attempt to legislate this.0 -
However, this does beg the question, why should it be acceptable to use physical voilence against a child, but if you did the same (essentially) to an adult, it is considered assault, and a crime?
Who is more defenseless than a small child?0 -
The gov't has told us how to raise our kids for years...this is not new... 0 -

Get real,..........the changing times, and declining values dictate you to be wrong.
Nothing personal, but a good swat never killed any kid, and back when that was common practice, things were quite a bit better.
The "chidrens" that are being brought up today,........just like I am going through, would have never happened years ago.
Look at the changes over the years, and apply as you wish.[xx(]
I am glad that you are one of the "lucky" ones, is all I can say.
Marc,
I am about as 'real" as "real" gets...declining values my butt. Values have been changing since the dawn of civilization. every generation thinks the next generation is incorigable. Kids get their values from their parents, they learn from example, if they have a realtionship with their parents and feel they trust them, they will look to them for sound and honest direction on what is right and wrong.
I've worked with emotionally disturbed/violent kids for years in the past, and whether you want to admit it or not, the one common thread in most situations is parents whose only effort at discipline is physical violence.
You are right about one thing, I do consider myself "lucky" in that the kids have (sofar) turned out pretty good, in spite of their parents0 -
