Pick up hitchhikers...?
...I never do, unless it's obviously a disabled vehicle, but I made an exception this morning. The young guy's girlfriend, with whom he has a child, left him stranded out of town, while she left to party with friends. We found his car at a fast food place, but no girlfriend. I left him with $5 to make phone calls and get a bite to eat. Also, advice to not let the impending argument get physical in any way. I hope things work out for him.

I used to pick up hitch hikers, because I've hitched some myself. But not so much these days. 0 -
One time 4 of us were going trout fishing on the Indian reservation. We picked up this drunk Apache Indian walking along the highway. He rode with us for about 20 miles until he indicated for us to stop. Out in the middle of nowhere. He headed over the hill to where he lived. Before he left he told us a good spot to fish and hoped we caught a lot of fish. Pretty nice guy but drunk as a skunk!

In the 1950's and 1960's I did a lot of traveling by thumb, so in the 1960's and into the 1970's I didn't leave a hitchhiker standing by the road. As the world got more and more insane, I picked up hitchhikers less and less. Now I don't pick them up. It's a shame the good have to suffer for the bad, but I guess that's what insanity is all about. 0 -

Back when all i could afford to drive was an old beater I picked up hitchhikers. Now that I drive nice vehicles I don't. Driving an expensive car makes you a more appealing target of robbery. 0 -
I almost always pick up individuals but rarely will I stop for more than one person. 0 -
I hitched alot years ago, but i was told by an "old hippy" to NEVER just put your thumb out "You'll never get a ride that way" he said."You need to have a sign, so folks will know you're going some where.
It seemed to always work, for me .[;)]

In today's world, unless you have a death wish, it isn't advisable. However, that used to be my mode of travel to and from college back in the early/mid 60's. 0 -

I hitched to and from school in the 80s. I gotta say, it was a blast I met some great people.
BUT...
I was trying to get home up I 85 north of Durham, NC and was having a hard time getting a ride from Greensboro, NC. It was hot amd way too much traffic on a friday afternoon. Finally, after three hours of misery, and old chrysler pulls over and backs up. This car is a pure rag smoking and barely running. I go up to the door and open it and all manner of junk falls out. I look over and it is the ugliest woman I have ever seen driving. Fat, about three teeth and hair that looks like a freakin broom. as I am standing there she looks at me and says, "you ain't gonna rape me are you?"
Now, I indicated that that was far from my mind and got in. On the way up 85 she told me she was going to visit her boyfriend in the maximum security prison at Butner and that he was "in" for killing her mother....

I have hitchiked a lot. Once, I got a 14 day vacation, and hitchiked from Atlanta to Boulder Colorado, from there east to Duluth Minnesota, north into Canada and around the Great Lakes, and then east to Vermont, then back to Atlanta. Back home Sunday night, and back at work Monday morning.
Once I hitchiked from northern British Columbia to Atlanta, 4,300 miles.
I hitchiked all over Europe, from Italy to Sweden, from England to Denmark. Got hit on by a Kraut gay boy, he got mad when I said "no" and he made me get out in the middle of the Autobahn, two miles from an exit in the rain.
On the other hand, ONE TIME I had the hitchiker's dream. I got a ride in Nebraska with a female driver. Wound up back at her apartment at 10 pm, and I mean, "she offered her honor, I honored her offer, and all night long it was on her and off her."
She was engaged to be married in two weeks, but was considering calling the thing off. So, I gave her what I considered counseling. She wrote me a letter a week later, she had dumped her fiancee.
Anyway, one time I figured it up, I had hitchiked more than the circumference of the earth, 25,000 miles.
This was back in the seventies.
When I was driving, I picked up all hitchikers.
These days, I pick up hitchikers on occasion. Many of them stink, and just give me the creeps. If I see a guy with a backpack I will give him a ride, he is probably going to hike the Appalachian trail.
Most of the hitchikers, I pass by, it is a dangerous world. These young punks see a guy like me who is bald with a gray beard, they figure it is a geezer who is an easy mark. I am not, and do have a "surprise" for such a person, but who needs the hassle?0 -

I've done some hitch-hiking, and I still occasionally pick up a hitch-hiker. Is it a good idea? Probably not. 0 -
Used to do some cross country hitching, and used to pick up hitchers. Some were pretty interesting, but it got to be that most were not very interesting and I quit. Now most of what I see hitching appears to be either homeless or jailbait, and I go on by. 0 -
I do on occasion.
The .45 is switched to the seat under the left leg.

My uncle told me that during WW II soldiers were not allowed to hitch hike in uniform. What a lot of them did was buy a bag of peanuts. Then while walking along the side of the road, they would turn to see an approaching vehicle and throw a peanut shell over their shoulder using their thumb. He said those in uniform were always picked up. 0 -

A couple of years ago I was driving down a country highway, and I saw a beautiful hourglass physique in tight bluejeans walking down the side of the road. As I approached, she threw out a thumb without even looking back. I, of course, hit the brakes with both feet.
She stepped up to the car, and smiled with about 2 and a half teeth. I gave her a ride a couple of miles up the road. She'd already walked about 15 miles that day. Her car broke down, and she was walking home.[:0]
no porno scenes ensued.
I also picked up 3 canadian chicks on the way to a music festival last year. They were all pretty hot, but yet again...no porno scenes ensued.

After High School a friend of mine picked up a hitch hiker. Guy put a gun to his head and made him drive from Indiana to Penns. then left him naked and out of gas in the country. Deputy gave him a blanket and a ride to headquarters to call him Mom for a western union. 0 -
True story[:)] While driving trough Arizona in the early 70s I picked up a pair of female hitchhikers. I took them to their house, and they invited me in. When I left the next morning I was walking real funny like. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

I pretty much always pick up a hitchhiker. I figure they need a ride or they wouldn't have their thumb in the air.
I broke down on old Highway 80 in Texas about 5 years ago at 2:00AM. Cold, winter time, 15 miles from the nearest pay phone, and I'm not knocking on anyones door at 2:00AM in the morning.
Started walking and stuck my thumb in the air for every passing car. Just about the time I was about to pass out, I guy stopped, picked me up, and took me to his house to call for help. One of God's angels, he was.
Bought a cell phone the next day.0 -
When I was young and stupid, you could often get hitches just walking along without resorting to thumbing them down. People were much friendlier. Since owning vehicles I've given rides as well, but not so much anymore. Too dangerous. The last guy I gave a ride to looked hungry, so went by McDonalds and bought him a burger. Let him off as close as I could to his exit ( I was on a schedule) and he griped because he had to cross the road. 0 -
Very seldom. I think in the last ten years I've picked up two, and they weren't actually hitching. Saw their cars by the side of the road, then them walking aways up, headed for a gas station and/or phone. In those cases I offered the ride.
As has been said, things have gotten too crazy.0
