Just another unscientific, anecdotal "gun writer" article. Mostly BS.

Let me hit you in the chest with a 9# sledgehammer and you tell me if you want to keep fighting!

I don't know who this guy is, but he uses a lot of words to say nothing. Some of his "facts" are just plain wrong. For example:

"There's not one documented incident in which an officer was knocked unconscious or physically incapacitated or in any way rendered unable to perform willful activity after his soft armor stopped such a projectile. These officers absorbed nearly 100 percent kinetic energy transfer, yet none were incapacitated by the blunt trauma "shock" of projectile impact or temporary displacement of underlying soft tissues."

[?] Why do you think they put trauma plates in vests?

The article supports my thinking on this subject, therefore, it must be correct.

    Good job !!

[8D]--I've still got two full sets of soft armor, although it's getting Fairly rigid with age (don't go there)--[:D][:D]

Good Lord. You can tell the people who burn bulls and rams on the altar to Ayoob. They do NOT like having their ideas challenged.

Some of the people's responses to this are meaningless.

"Let me hit you in the chest with a 9# sledgehammer and you tell me if you want to keep fighting!"
    - That's not the point. This is the same stupid saying, rephrased, that some people say: "Well, would YOU want to get shot with <Insert favorite caliber here>? No? Didn't think so. I WIN!!" No, I wouldn't want to get get hit with a small tack hammer or a subsonic .22 short in the chest either. What exactly does your statement prove, aside from the fact that you didn't read the article?

JamesRK, do you have a documented incident?

"Just another unscientific, anecdotal "gun writer" article. Mostly BS."
    - Actually, scientific is what they're all about. You should see the rest of the site.

The point of the article is that you CAN NOT RELY ON 'KNOCKDOWN' OR 'ENERGY TRANSFER' TO DO YOUR JOB FOR YOU. They give two examples of this: the officer that emptied the .357 into the attacker that not only survived but fought back and killed the officer, and the wound to the motorcycle thief that in no way would have caused his reaction physically, but it still put him down. The primary tactic you must rely on is destroying tissue in such a way that physically prevents further agression on the part of the attacker.

I hope that writer was paid by the word and NOT the scientific content.

I know there have been cases reported where people have taken multiple .45's,I saw one where a guy took 11 .40's and was still able to kill the man he was shot by,there was a shooting here a few years back where a police officer and a criminal had a shoot out across the officers cruiser and both were hit 5 times each with the officer survivng his wounds and the perp not fairing so well.I have seen reports of people taking 15 9mm's and still being able to function.Handguns are effective tools, not as effective as rifles of course but effective none the less.Isnt that why Rifles are so effective though because of energy transfer??If Im wrong please correct me.As for the energy issue I myself beleive in the theory. My father has been a police officer for over 25 years and in all that time he was involved in 1 shooting back in 1980 he had to fire on a man that had threatend his wife and was brandishing a shotgun at neighbors. He did it by the book but he was carrying back then his 4" .357 Magnum Colt Python. He fired 2 rounds and the man hit the dirt in a second. My father said you could actually hear the wind get knocked out of him and he fell like he was struck by lightning that sold me and him on the concept. He also owns an old Colt Government model .45 but he trust that .357 more than that .45 because he has seen it work first hand up close and personal and didnt see a need to try anything different he stuck with what worked until he was issued a 9mm and then a .40(Back when he had to fire on duty they supplied their own weapons).Proof enough for me though.
