7MM-08 Opinions

My wife has been thinking of getting herself a short action bolt rifle and we have thought about the 7MM-08.

Looked and compared the 7MM-08 to the 308 and noticed that it seems to retain velocity and energy downrange a bit better and also seems to shoot a bit flatter.

Anyone out there use this caliber and have good or bad feedback?

    Thanks

i have not personally ever used it, but i was reading in a few posts yesterday, some people wish our army had chambered the m-14 for the 7mm-08 over the .308

I'm going to get one for my grandaughter to use for deer hunting. It seems like a versitile cartrige, fun to reload. Maybe in a Savage or Ruger.

I don't own it, but I've sent a few rounds down range from my friends' 7mm-08, Keep in mind, the gun itself is a heavy bbl, Remington 700 with a beautifully done trigger. The gun and ammo combo is so accurate that shooting paper at 100 yards gets boringly predictable. In a good way.
I've heard this is the case with a lot of guns in that caliber.

    Recoil is mild, too.

Recoil is one of the issues Colonel. My wife shoots alot, but she is only 5' and uses a youth model on all her long guns so anything that has harsh recoil is magnafied in a shorter stocked rifle.

She likes the feel of the 700SPS youths (already has her 243 in that) and by adding a little weight in the buttstock area I think it would help with any recoil.

I have a rifle barrel for my encore in 7mm-08. I love it. Have shot a couple of big muleys with it and it drpped both of them.

Have a 7mm-08 barrel for my sons handi rifle. It has caused him to put the 243 barrel away forever as far as deer hunting goes! For a light recoiling cartridge for deer size game, you cannot beat the 7mm-08!! All of his kills with it have been one shot, two at over 150 yards. The rest from 100 yards and in. IMHO...Great round for ANYONE, especially those of smaller stature or who are recoil sensitive.

I have two rifles chambed for this caliber as I prefer it for my top choice. One is a Browning lever action Mod 81, the other being a barrel for a Savage Mod 112. I have several barrels for the Savage but when it comes hunting time the 7mm-8 goes on. Excellent balistics & can be reloaded with many mild recoiling powders. Cases are easily obtainable as they can be formed from the .308. I think it would be an excellent choice.

Ive got a Winchester 7MM-08 and a Remington .308 I cant tell much difference in the two. The only major difference I find is the 180gr bullets for the .308 make it a much better brush gun. Plus if you want to hunt Elk Ive heard and read that the .308 is the Minimum caliber to use. HTH

I think it's for people who have a deep-seated religious objection to the .308.

The rumor I remember (from Cooper?) is that the 7mm-08 was invented for areas where the .308 was illegal.

My wife has that cal in a Remington Model 7 that we got many years ago. Excellent round and she is very happy with it.

Got a ruger compact in 7-08 and shoot the 120 grain hollow point out of it. Recoil if very light for a 28 caliber round..

I just bought a Remington 700 Mountain Gun in this caliber, and it's a sweetie. I am a gun/ammo history nut, so enjoy how Mr. Mauser's 7x57 mutated into the 30-06, then the .308, then the 7-08, which comes close to the original 7-57 (although the 08 is perhaps slightly better).

And yes, it will kill an elk. Gotta get a bit closer, but it will do the job.

I like the .308 case length, as it makes lighter guns and the recoil isn't bad. My next purchase will be a .338 Federal.
