Ballistic Gel vs. Water For testing??
I have been looking at a interesting link that MCASO put on a post of mine the other day. I have to admit that I test rounds when I can,not with ballistics gel but other things I have heard are good for testing. My main testing method has always been water or clay. I was looking at the site The Box O Truth that MCASO turned me onto and noticed something that I have had happened to me. All of the .40s&w rounds that were fired into water seperated from their jackets and didnt penetrate very far. This is the sole reason I swapped to Bonded Golden Sabres because it would happen so often but that is not the only ammuntion I have had that happen with.It has never happened in clay just in water.Clay it just mushrooms good and penetrates. I have a Golden Sabre I fired into clay that expanded bigger than a quarter which I was very impressed with. My basic point of this is how reliable is water for testing if it tends to shred jackets because I know the ammo companies test their rounds and Im sure they use ballistics gel. I dont see Remington putting out the Golden Sabres and labeling them "Our Finest Quality" if they are testing them in water and they are shedding their jackets which I consider a bullet failure. Anybody else noticed this problem,have better solutions to testing which arent as exspensive and hard to do as ballictics gel or is water the next best thing and the bullets just failed?

ballistic gel is probably the closest thing to tissue there is while water is like shooting in to a concrete wall or even harder...even a 50 bmg rd will fragment in to tiny pieces in water testing...don't you watch myth busters.???...I'm no expert by any means maybe someone else can shed some more light on this subject...Loko 0 -
I did see that Mythbusters actually and found in strange that that .50 cal and the 30/06 shredded like that but also on the same show the handgun bullets didnt do what the rifle bullets did they penetrated further and the shotgun slug just blew up their whole testing box[:D] 0
