Seattle School District celebrated Thanksgiving today with the children of this city as a Day of Mourning! It seems like the Indians among us are growing more and more like the NAACP, and LaRaza.

What the indians don't mention is that while they whine about what "the white man" did to them. They thought nothing of doing the same to one another.
Anyone who has studied American indian history knows that there's a reason some tribes sided w/the whites. It was because the stronger tribes made regular practice to stealing from and killing the weaker tribes. If they need it, they took it and left the weak to starve. Survival of the strongest.
Then we did it them and now they cry about it.0 -
I think it's mostly the Ward Churchill type Indians who say Thanksgiving is a time of mourning. 0 -
Here's a concept -- that people learn to be tolerant enough of one another to appreciate the good points in others, while being honest enough to admit that sometimes, historically, those good points maybe weren't put to the best of uses.
Thanksgiving essentially acknowledges the thankfulness of the Pilgrims who had gained a toehold and a little breathing room in what was, to them, a howling and hostile wilderness. What came after was tragic. Hindsight is a wonderful but incredibly misused capability. I doubt the Pilgrims had any more idea than the Indians did, what would come to pass in the years and centuries to come.
Much the same with successive waves of settlers who made their way into that same wilderness the Pilgrims had braved. Yes, they or the government representing them often swindled and dispossessed those who were there first. Murder was done on both sides. None of that changes the courage (or in many cases desperation) it took to move one's family into what was essentially a combat zone.
We could acknowledge the sense of thanksgiving, and the courage, and the key role that both played in the founding of a nation which now gives its inhabitants the freedom to bash both the country and its history at will, and often with little regard for facts -- without demonizing either the immigrants to this country, or the ones who were here first and inevitably got the short end of the stick as our nation expanded.
On second thought, though -- nah. Passing judgement from a position of superiority is so much more satisfying, isn't it?
Happy Thanksgiving anyway, folks. I go to celebrate with my ex-wife's family, particularly with the ex-father-in-law who has been like a second dad and may have waited nearly a year too long to share with his doctor how poorly he was feeling -- due to cancer, we've just found out. I will be thinking of and calling my father, 1600 miles away, whose pancreatic cancer is in remission and whose health would be considered poor even without that particular burden.
I hope what you assign priority to in your thoughts, today and in all days to come, will reflect well on you.0 -
Damn straight. Besides no white person living today was handing out blankets on the reservation and no Indian was getting these blankets on the reservation.
