Ice Road Truckers
I recently finished watching a marathon of the latest season of the show.
Something got me wondering. Why would you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars/day for vehicles, fuel, lodging, insurances, and income for personnel when there could be a small fleet of LCAC transports to move cargo during the winter months for the same price?
I mean a vehicle w/an 80 ton load capacity and can move it 300km at 35km/h over a questionable road surface. This would be better, no?

Anyone else watch this History Channel program about the winter truck drivers hauling freight up the Dalton Highway from just north of Fairbanks to Purdue Bay?
It's a 500 mile journey on roads covered with ice that encompasses some of the most beautiful scenery in America.0 -
All day marathon on the History Channel today, starting at Noon, Central Time. Every episode, and it's going to run all afternoon, ending with the season (series?) finale. I'm definatly watching it. 0 -
i can't watch it anymore, it makes me nervous for one, but the narrator just gets on my nerves, every other word is overly dramatized, if the viewer cannot realize the apparent danger without the use of the narrator and his drama they are not to bright, the show is good all by itself 0 -

On tonight's episode Hugh the Polar Bear was stuck out in the middle of no where. So he said hey I should get my new rifle out. So he reaches in back of the cab and pulls out what he calls his 1953 SKS 15.
He says look, its even got a bayonet and proceeds to unfold it.
He pulls a stripper clip out and loads it in his cab then he proceeds to shoot some oranges and a can of soup his so called survival food.
Some people just should not be allowed to have guns.0 -
This is going to be a new show on history channel.
I will be watching it! I allways wanted to go drive the ice roads when I was still driveing truck!

Kinda what I thought too ... I don't get into "real life made for TV" ... but to each their own. I know a few people that don't get into Star Trek; now that I could watch all day [:)]0 -

I have been Tivoing it since I saw the first episode its definetly not Deadleast Catch but it is intresting to watch. 0 -

I've only watched one other episode, and just tuned into where one foot wouldn't go up on a driver's trailer jack..."because it was too cold". Don't these people carry propane tanks and weed burner type torches for such events..?[:0] 0 -

It is not just the money for many truck drivers!
It also happens to be the ultimate challenge!
I have wanted to go and drive those roads for a long time!
I drove for over 16 years before I got hurt to wear I could not work anymore. After a number of years driving the hiways alot of the challenge fades away.
On the Ice Roads there would always be a challenge as you would constently have to stay on your toes even with the long demanding days!
I still wish I would have gotten the chance to run up there for a season!0 -

Hugh is an a$$. He has 4 trucks, only one of which is in top condition, which of couse he drives, the other three are crap, then he b!*@ches when the other 3 break down, and blames the drivers!

Nothing. It is nothing more than a STUNT, and is done for no other reason than to make more money for already rich diamond merchants.
Driving a truck across a frozen lake? Because the lake is only frozen and passable a few months of the year? Hmmm. Seems to me that it would also be passable by BOAT when the ice melts, and for more days per year. Even if that isn't possible, for the money these people have been spending getting their necessities moved across a lake by truck, they could have built a bridge by now.0 -
hell if you want a chance to make money and take a risk go drive truck in iraq or afghanistan. hazmat and tanker endorsement needed.
www.kbr.com of course you make good money but the risk is real and no weapons allowed in your truck. if they find one you get taken to airport to find your own way home. i saw it happen0 -

I allready did that!
Everything I hauled in the Army over there fell under Hazmat (I hauled fuel and explosives)!
I still would like to rune the Ice Roads!0
