Hey, on that note, anyone own DPMS .308 or AR-10 varmint models? How well do they hold up under field conditions? I would like to hunt elk with my .308 out of a 5-round magazine and so it might get a little dirty. Are the DPMS and AR guns robust, or do they run too tight and brittle for heavy field use?

i was wondering the same thing about the rra model, only thing i don't like about them is in the .308 model they only guarantee a 1.5 moa at 100 yards

I think that 1.5 MOA is only to cover their butts for making an accuracy guarantee... their 16" carbines, 20", and 26" .308 guns are all "1.5 MOA guaranteed" but I think the 26" bull barrel varmint model would be better than that... besides, 1.5 MOA at 100yds from a 16" barrel out-of-the-box is pretty good in my book. What's holding me back the most is the thought of a Patriot Ordnance Factory .308 gas piston-operated carbine; the perfect hybrid of the FAL and AR. No gas blown into the receiver, rugged and clean piston system, AR handling and accuracy... Oooohhh... I think I have to change my pants.

My DPMS will do 1moa easy. You would do better to get the 16" or 18" for hunting. My 24" probaly tips the scales at 15+lbs with scope, mounts and 10rd mag.

I agree that 20" would be much more pleasant to hunt with, but I'm trying to stretch the power of the .308 by using a longer 24-26" barrel.

Geeze, speaking of which, did you see the new prototype Kel-Tec .308 bullpup system? It's basically a long barrel that serves as the frame and everything is mounted on the first foot or so of steel and then the rest of the barrel free floats after the handgaurd mount. They showed the 18" barrel-model rifle (ready-to-shoulder) next to a FAL Para with the stock folded and the KelTec was still shorter. They say the 32" barrel model will allow the acceleration of a .308 bullet to .300 Rem Win Magnum speeds... and the gun itself is 6" longer than the barrel, so the 32" barrel "bullpup sniper rifle" will be shorter than your average 20" barrel battle rifle, much shorter than a varmint bull barrel-equipped AR-variant.

I just hope Kelgren built these things with tough parts and found a way to smooth the aberrant barrel harmonics produced from all the mounted gear on the barrel.

(edited to correct Kel-Tec bullet speed claim)
