I'm sure some of the other services would find some other use for them......

A nice tale, but they're actually taught this. Basic first aid class teaches that tampons are THE go-to item for expedient bandages.

I knew of a guy that screwed this up once. He had a really bad nosebleed and decided the best course of action was to insert one as far up his nostril as he could get it. It stopped the blood flow alright, but expanded to the point he couldn't get it out. Ended up having to go to the ER to get it removed. [:D]

I've had some in my first aid box for a long time. They work great. We have used them in the ER for multiple GSW that needs rapid stablizing.

I once used spider webs on a buddy - it worked just fine.

Anyone that thinks this si TOOOO far fetched- loggers that use chain saws will freqently keep a box of sanitary napkins 9sealed) behind the seat of the truck, with the 1st aid gear. IF you cut yourself with a chainsaw, the standard guaze 2x2 does not do much for you- but a Kotex Maxi pad...... And we used to use panty hose as M-16 socks for really dusty environments. whatever works.

Tampons have always been great for nose bleeds. And crazy glue for closing up a cut out in the field.
