Strongarm Germans!!
Is there a way to lessen the hard trigger pull without sacrificing reliability? I have read that some have used replacement springs but have had occasional misfires. Love the VP, but I can't shoot for longer than a 1/2 hour without handcramps and grouping going to hell. I have been looking at a replacement- S&W MP 40. Any suggestions?

you don't replace the trigger springs, you stone the trigger. a gunsmith does that. 0 -

Ok, I'm at a loss as to what that means, "Stone the trigger". Please explain. I have read where people changed the spring, but it always seems to lead to misfires. My local gunsmith did not recommend changing the spring either. any help would be appreciated.0 -

Does polishing reduce friction resulting in an easier pull? I apologize for the ignorance on this issue. I have started shooting in the past year so all this is new to me. The pistol was given to me by a friend who was retiring and never used it. It came with all the original items in the factory box - test shot factory target, warranty card, (3) 18 round clips, manual. I had the local gunsmith check it out because it looked as if it had hardly ever been fired and who knows how long it had been stored. when a gun is cocked, some part related to the trigger is holding back some part related to the hammer. to make it simple, just say the trigger is pushing against the hammer. it holds it back.
when you're pulling the trigger back with your finger, the part of the trigger against the hammer slides until it gets to the end of whatever it's sliding on, slips off, the hammer springs forward and hits the firing pin.
you know there's a lot of pressure between the trigger and the hammer. if the surface is rough, that makes it harder to pull the trigger because it's "scraping" along. polish it nice and smooth, and it makes it easier to pull the trigger because there's less friction.
some cheap guns are fairly rough. "stoning the trigger" makes a big difference.
most guns (like what you have) are okay, "stoning the trigger" makes some difference.
you can stone the trigger to where it's ground down so much that the "edge" where the trigger falls off and the hammer springs forward to hit the firing pin comes sooner, consult your gunsmith about whether that's appropriate for your firearm or not. in that case, making it smoother makes it easier to pull the trigger, and with the hammer falling sooner you still have to pull just as hard, just not as far so it's less work to pull the trigger until the hammer falls on the firing pin. do it too much and you've got a "hair trigger", no matter how stiff the spring is.
you must realize that changing the characteristics of the trigger may make the firearm unsafe.
take it to a gunsmith, tell them what you want and have them do it.0 -
