you dont see people talking about them because some think theyre junk, there are some good ones and some bad ones, i think it has mostly to do with the accuracy/innacuracy of it for the price of the gun.

Ak's are better then the mini, I have heard they are not accurate and alot of $$ for a S*it rifle.

    7.63X39 is a poor cartridge.

I have liked minis for years, and I don't care for the con job that's been put over on American shooters about the ARs and their variants and the AKs and their variants.

I also don't delight in the varmint cartridge of 5.56NATO.

I bought a SKS and loved it, but I wanted to do better while shooting speed challange, plus I wanted to use optics so I bought a Mini-30. Less than 6 months later I sold the Mini-30 and I kept shooting the SKS, the SKS was just a better rifle, and the best bargin out of the bunch.

Con job? What have we American shooters been conned about?

I think that the superiority of the two cartridges has been vastly overstated for years.

Mini is an overall good gun but it has several drawbacks. The biggest one being mags. It is hard to find reliable mags over 10rds and if you do they are not cheep. For pretty much any of the other systems you list you can find mags all day long for under $10.

The various militaries of the Earth have continued to use either two of these cartridges for the past half-century or so, with no change in the forseeable future. I'd say thats a pretty good track record.

Excuse me- Krinkovman- you do not own a mini30 or a mini 14. So how can you say an AK is better? You obviuosly have no experience in these matters. Tell you what I own a mini-14 and it is much more accurrate that the AK style weapons I own. You're just going off what some OTHER people on the forums say. Now if you said the AR-15 was better than a mini- then yes- I would agree with you. I think a mini-14 is better than a WASR-10. Which you covet so highly. Here's my mini-14:

    NOW- Show me your's!!![:D]

Well, I was talking about the Mini 30, I would not compare two different calibers. Also who wants to pay the outrageous prices for Ruger hicap mags, or buy the crappy off brand mags. AK mags are cheaper and better. You have some nice guns but, I'll take my Wasr-10 over your SKS's anyday. Seems like alot of work to make that AR pistol an AOW with the front grip on it isnt that a class 3, or Form 4? Also im just wondering how many people would take an AK over a mini 30 anyday. I'm sure it's ALOT.

I've owned 5 Mini-14's and one Mini-30 They are awesome lightweight accurate rifles. My only gripe is the late models after the 182XXXX serial numbers. They tend to jam alot.

Never have owned a Mini-30. I do have a Mini-14, have had it for years and love it. I've experienced no problems, I've found that there are good A/M mags and bad ones. It'll eat the cheapest discount ammo out there and you can customize the hell out of it to suit your purposes.

The only real drawback is that as a stock gun, the accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. Customize that and you can easily fix the problem.

How is it an overstatement of the 223/5.56 superiority when combined with the AR15 has won more high power rifle matchs then any other round.
The AR and 223 DOMINATE at local and national shooting events.

Thank all you gentlemen who have answered my question. I am not into the customizing that many here enjoy, but I want a decent rifle to shoot with friends who have the others mentioned, an intermediate caliber for training my nieces and nephews, and also to carry for javelina. Hunting in the desert, you need a rifle with 200 yd.+ accuracy, and I felt that the larger bullet would be more effective. Thinking about it a little more though, I have no idea if the 7.62x39 is sold with hunting bullets. And as far as accuracy, I know that the ar is better, but I feel a little foolish running around with that in a hunting situation. Also from what I've seen here, a good one gets real pricey real quick. And to top it off, I'm left-handed and the ars tend to eject into my face and neck. I got a nasty burn in boot camp once from that.

Nice catch I didn't even notice. If you do not have your Kel-Tec registered as a AOW with the ATF you HAVE an illegal NFA firearm. If you are not aware NFA violations are punishable by up to 20yr prison and $250,000 fine, not counting legal troubles.

My experience has been that the Rugers tend to jamb often and are not very accurate...not to mention expensive.

You seem to be very judging of other people's tastes.

On a completely different note, this is my personal favorite when it comes to combat rifles:

The Ruger design is OK, except........

The barrel and chamber are a bit on the skinny side, and get real hot real fast. I can't imagine the, is it AC-556?, not overheating after firing a full magazine.

The bolt is a bit skimpy compared to similar caliber rifles.

Magazines? Seems like I remember AR-15 mags can be easily made to work in Mini-14, but maybe I'm wrong not only formerly.

Parts are "investment cast". Not very precise.

Yes, expensive now, but not originally. Think 180 or 181 series had a recall of some kind.

But they shoot nice, and unless a gun screws up continually with no fix in sight, I only tell what I see, but won't out & out condemn it.

SKS is a great rifle for the money, but it's caliber is rather ineffective- about same energy level as 100+ year old 30-30.

Not well set up for a removable box magazine.

M-16/AR-15, AK-47 interesting designs, AK a little better in my book, but any gas-operated rifle should have that mechanism BELOW the barrel. Sighting a rifle should be done over the barrel, not a gas tube.
