The news reports stated that Mexican offshore oil rigs were being shut down a couple of days ago in anticipation of the storm hitting. That would cause an immediate change in the amount of crude available to us on a local basis since we buy very considerable amounts of oil from Mexico. Since there is no decrease in demand, a decrease in supply should cause an increase in price, at least from the results of speculative investment driving up prices.
There would be some additional market fear that our oil rigs could suffer again from the storm and that will add additional fear and uncertainty to the markets. Markets don't like uncertainty - price up. Speculation by definition anticipates events, so it would be expected that the prices will rise in anticipation of potential problems. If the problems actually occur, the final results will determine whether the speculative increases were enough to cover the decrease or if even higher prices are needed to cover the changes.

On Monday most stations raised it 15 cents. By this afternoon most had dropped back to where they were or within a nickel. Trying to gouge using the storm as an excuse but the storm didn't really harm the flow of oil or gas so that scheme sort of collapsed. 0 -
