Shot my 642 today....couple questions
Well, I finally got to take my S&W 642 (.38 snubby) out to the range. I'm not real familiar with revolvers, so I thought I'd ask a couple (stupid) questions.
1) After shooting it several times, it seemed to "gum up". It seemed to function fine w/o ammo, but when loaded it became difficult to squeeze the trigger. I assumed it had heated up after firing, but ran out of daylight before I could let it cool for a while
2) The damn thing beat the hell out of my hand. I can shoot my .45 all freaking day without discomfort, but not this little guy.....any recommendation for grips?

I'm partial to the Houge mono grips..ie finger groove..they are more comfortable for me anyway..practice w/out using +p ammo try some lower gr. rounds see if it helps the ease the recoil felt in your hand..lightweight usally means more recoil..great pocket gun..[8D]..Loko..use some good bore scrubber and oil it up good.. 0 -
I got a S&W 640 for the wife some time ago - it had the same "gumming up" problem you describe. Still does to some extent. I just clean and oil it a lot, and it seems to be getting better. Not sure I want to send it in to get loosened up. It is the Cylinder bearing that gets tight, at least in my case. I just oil the heck out of that area each time, after a real good cleaning, and I spin the cylinder a lot each time I do so. It is getting a lot better. 0 -

I'm assuming you bought it for concealed carry thus will not be firing it much. Any after market grips that would sufficiently tame the recoil would ad bulk to the little beast, possibly making it less comfortable to carry or harder to conceal. I'd put up with the recoil. If you need it for serious business you'll only be firing 5 rounds max and the adrenalin will make the recoil a non factor.[;)]
As for the tightening up, I've fired a lot of rounds through a variety of wheelguns and never experienced this. As a guess maybe there's a residue build up in the chambers that keeps the fresh rounds from fully seating causing the base of the cartridges to rub against the frame? Maybe the guys in Ask the Experts have the answer.0 -
Had a model 10 that did the same thing after about 30 rds. Turned out to be the nurled knob that retains the ejector rod through the cylinder loosened up just enough to cause the cylinder to drag. After tightening up the knob, everything was fine. loosens up from time to time still. Don't no if this is chronic or typical with some Smiths. One time it loosened up enough to prevent the cylinder from opening. Good luck![:)] 0
