Anybody ever own a Honda 300 ATV?
Are they very good and will they last? Do they have much power? Co-worker has one for sale and I am trying to find out about them. I think it is a 1996 and green in color. Any experiences or knowledge of these would be appreciated. He said it runs good and the compression was like 180. Thanks

Most all the Hondas are like the battery bunny-- they just keep on running....

i have a 350 honda atv and weigh 300 lbs. it has more power than i need. a friend has a 300 honda and it will pull with both of us on it about 480 lbs. total even with all that weight it doesn't bog down any. 0 -
Here is my 1987 Honda 250x Fourtrax with a 300 engine...I am about 220 lbs. and this thing come up in first and second gear everytime. It has a jet kit exhaust and ram air induction. Like I said its an 87 but you would never know it........

It is to hard to earn a dollar these days, just to foolishly waste it on an inferior product. doesn't matter where that product is made IMO0 -
I have a 1995 Honda 300 fourtrax and it has been a good machine. It was several years old when I got it but it had been kept nice. I am currently about to buy a new Honda Foreman 500. My daughter has taken over my 300 and won't let me ride it.

Honda has never made a better machine. Period. The 300 will still be running when the rest are rotting. They just won't die. Keep the fuids topped and the wheel bearings fresh and it'll last forever. I've had 3 of them and currently own 2. Down here in LA. we do a lot of mud riding. The 300 definately ain't the biggest or fastest but it gets the job done. While the newer big bores are nice they just don't hold up to the abuse the 300 will take. Here's a couple pics of me trying to destroy my 300.[:D][;)]

The 300 Honda engine is one of the best motors ever made. Bullet proof. Buy it and you will be happy I'm sure. Keep the oil changed and regular maintenance and it will last. 0 -

I have a 1988 Honda 300 4x4 that I bought new. Only use it at hunting time. Sitting is real hard on batteries so have had to replace quite a few of them over the years. Other than that it has been a great machine. 0 -

You know, I really have to laugh when I see a comment like this. EVERY time a post comes up regarding Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc a comment like this is made.
Get real folks, if everything you bought was made solely in the good ol' USA, you'd be living in a cave.

Forgot to answer your question. Thou you have gotten many great replies already.
The 300 Honda were the best 4-wheeler that was ever built.
As some have stated. They are not the biggest nor fastest machine made. But they will still be going when the others are headed for the barn.
I can not speak for everyone who has owned or been around them. Here the biggest problem people have had out of them were the rear axle diffs blowing out. Still it is rare to see it happen. 99.9% of the time it is the riders fault due to pushing the quad beyond its limits or total lack of maintenance.
They are many here that were built in the 80's that are still going strong.
The only draw back to them that I have found is the full time four wheel drive. Like the 350 Rancher that took the 300's place. They are hard on front tires and a little woolly to handle on tight trails.0 -

I've never heard of someone destroying a perfectly good rear end, not saying it hasn't happened, I've just never seen it. The one's I've seen tear up only did so because of two things: 1. ran dry (no oil) and 2. full of mud/water. When the rear seals start to wear they let mud/water in. Most people never or rarely check the fluid in the gear boxes. Once the mud/water is in there, the bearing go then the ring/pinion follow. I check/change mine after every ride, but I ride mine in some nasty stuff.
I also have a Warn 424 unlocker on mine, which allows me to switch from 4x4 to 2x4. They make them for most all time 4x4 wheelers out there. Kinda pricey, but one of the best mods you can do to it.
The only other things I can think of that are negatives (same with all Hondas) are the brakes are horrible and will wear fast if you ride mud/water. Keep them clean and they'll last a good while. Also check the front wheel bearings by grabbing the top of the tire on the side and give it a good tug in and out. There should be no wiggle in it. If there is you need bearings. They are not pre-load bearings so you can't tighten them up, just have to replace them, but it's cheaper than wearing out a spindle. Good luck.

Lots of power and will run forever. But it will beat the crap out of you riding it. If you'r young and tough go for it. If you'r old and disabled like I am you want something that rides a lot better. 0 -
One of the most reliable atv's ever made. I still see them on the trails. I've rode a handful of them most of them are beat to he11 and ride like crap from such a hard life, but still running.

I had a '97 Honda Foreman. Ran like a top. Wish I still had it.
I still own a '84 ATC 110 and a '86 200X. I'm the original owner.
Both proved to be very reliable...no break-downs.
Hondas are bullet proof. If I were to buy another ATV, Honda is what I'd get. BTW, good availability of parts.0 -
Thanks for all the help. I called the local Honda dealer and they said anything above 140 on the compression was great and this ATV had 180. The plastic has no holes or tears, the rubber is probably about 70%, Everything else checks out good except the seat has a hole in it an may need a cover. I went ahead and gave him $1200 for it. 0 -

If it's 2x4 then you did good. If it's 4x4 you stole it! There are sites where you can easily double your money if it's 4x4. Either way, enjoy it![8D]

Preventitive maintenence will will
