Man to serve 30 days for killing rabbit
A man will serve 30 days in jail then one year of probation for suffocating a rabbit in Lawrence.
Austin Newport, 23, also received a suspended one-year jail sentence, which would be imposed if he violates probation. While serving probation, Newport must undergo psychological evaluation and pay a $500 fine and $107 restitution to cover veterinary bills.
Newport was sentenced Monday in Douglas County District Court after earlier pleading guilty to animal cruelty.
He was accused of putting the rabbit, Melvin, in a plastic bag on July 27, 2006. His roommate, who shared ownership of the rabbit with Newport, took the animal to the veterinary hospital, where it died.

I just pick them up by their back paws and break their necks when I shoot one and it's still alive... 0 -

I don't think he's talking about rabbit hunting. The guy killed a tame rabbit. His roommate's pet.0 -

James...I gathered that...I guess I was just being a little too callused (sp?). I don't believe in torchering animals, but I do believe many have taken "animal rights" way too far.0 -

That's the way everybody I know does it except for my wife's cousin. He used to do it that way too, but one day he killed about six or eight rabbits and had them in the game pouch of his hunting jacket. When he got home he was on his screened-in back porch taking them out an lining them up on a table to clean them. About the third one he pulled out bit him and took off running. After the rabbit fight he broke his neck and cleaned him. He started saving loaf-bread sacks for rabbit season. Now when he kills a rabbit, if it isn't dead when he picks it up, he breaks its neck and puts it into the plastic bag. If it is dead it just goes into the bag. That way he avoids the surprises.0 -

I agree with the "taken `animal rights' way too far", but it was another man's rabbit. If he killed a living creature which belonged to me, even a goldfish, I'd be pretty pissed. I doubt if we would have gone to court though.0 -
