Ancestry.com vs. Genealogy.com vs. Etc.

Do any of you subscribe to any online family tree sites such as the ones listed in the subject line? They're pretty expensive, so before I pick one to use for research, I'd like to get some input from anyone who uses these sites. Which one is THE BEST in your opinion, and why do you think so? I already have my family tree pretty well filled out to the early 1800s, but would like to go back even further. Thanks.

    I have subscribed to Ancestry.com. You can access these sites for free at your local library and much more usually. If you are lucky enough to live in the same area as most of your family for the last couple of generations or so and you have the time I would search the original records in person. Most town halls are glad to accomodate as long as you are polite and try to keep your requests specific. I have a local city that lets you actually look through their index cards and then search the original record books for $5 for the day. This way you don't have to pay for birth/marriage/death certificates. It also speeds the process. Contact your local genealogical society, especially any that are large, and ask them if they know how you can access records for free or reduced fees. IMHO Ancestry.com and the otehrs are useful to an extant but very expensive.

    Go to the nearest Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) and ask if they have access to the database in Salt Lake City...they will show you how to do the research....one of the absolute best databases on ancestry and geneaology there is...FOR FREE! They won't proseletyze, and they are really helpful.

    Then go to counties listed and do some research in the courthouses at the county seat(s). Then, go Graverobbing - looking for your family names in the graveyards - this is surprisingly productive. We have located, and found records/history by using this method, that were poorly or incorrectly recorded in old records.

    Then, if you think it will help, go to the "Pay" sites.

    The two mentioned in the subject line are basically the same with different wrappers.[:)]
    As mentioned, your local library or one of the Mormon Church's (Family History Center)have the same data available for little or no cost.[:D]
    At either one of the sites home pages, you can search for Family History Centers for free. Some have limited hours.
