I don't care what people say about letting nature take its course. It always feels good to help out a wild animal (even a vicious one) that's down on its luck.

After he is all better you really should turn him loose in a chicken coop.

No chicken coops here... as soon as he (or she) is better, they are getting released up on an oil lease.

Mike found this little furball right here in town, residential area.

BR, sure he or she is cute as heck when he is sleeping, otherwise, he/she is all teeth and claws! And I wonder if it's a juvie, can't be more than 6 inches long body.
Front left front paw is all messed up, just dragging it under him/her, pretty pathetic. I'm hoping maybe it got caught in a stormdrain, alittle food, a little rest, and it will be good to go. I'm not so much worried about it escaping as I am my cat or dog getting at it. Or it getting at my cat or dog when they get too curious.....They don't historically get on with cats too well.
Will have to have rcrx load webcam.

There is a weasel, of sorts, about five feet from where I am sitting. He just climbed into his hammock to catch a nap.

If it is that small it probably is a juvienile. Also, if it is just dragging the foot, it doesn't sound good. I would find out if there is a vet that takes care of wild animals in your area and give them a call. It sounds as if the bones may be broken and if not set right, he/she will not heal correctly which will hamper them in the wild.

It's my ferret, Randy. A ferret is a sort of a weasel.

Just read this post. Sounds good to hear this kind of thing. I (literally) just sat down from inspecting my backyard. A bear, who is still there, by the way, dragged my garbage can into the woods.

Good deal all around. He gets a full belly, and I won't have to go to the dump.

I'll get my nephew to retreive the can after daybreak. Joe

Here's our little invalid....a few fun facts....

    http://www.enature.com/flashcard/show_flash_card.asp?recordNumber=MA0453

Apparently, the Inuit look upon this little critter with great respect, due to it's pugnacious nature, and to capture one is considered a portent of good luck.
Never one to question Native lore, I say, "Cool"!
He/she must have woke up several times last night, polished off the catfood and milk, soiled the tank, then curled up and went back to sleep. While it slept, we dropped another saucer of milk and some leftover chicken in the tank. Mike decided to try to wake it up by stroking it, and as soon as it's eyes were open, it turned like a flash and bit his gloved hand, then curled back up and went back to sleep. Good deal, still has some fight in it.
I'll watch it this morning, and if the front paw still is dragging, I'll call our vet to advise.

That article called the least weasel the "smallest living carnivore."

The article is wrong. Shrews are carnivores and smaller than weasels.

Shrews are omnivores, they also eat seeds, nuts, etc....
    Weasles are pure carnivores.[;)]

Back in tonight...he's lookin poor......Been keepin him on a regemin of antibiotic laced cat food...nice clean towel, but just seems 'weak'. If he makes it, great, but if he doesn't, I'll feel better knowing that he had enough to eat, fresh water and bedding, and someplace warm and dry to live out his last days. His appetite is great, but he has a sore on his back, and thus the need for the anti's. washed it out with peroxide, made sure that he was fed and comfy, wrapped him up in his towel, and he's freshly bathed, sleeping, with our cat and our golden curiously looking into his pen. still strong enough to attack my gloved hand when I mess with him,,,still fighting.

I know, that most here think that I'm just an old, tough craggy oilman, but I have a huge soft spot for animals, (although no matter what time of year it is, Grouse, Deer and turkey literally make my mouth water!) Hell i even like my ol' lady's cat! but little Shifty here, is different.

At any rate, i hope that he makes it, and if not, I'll be thankful for the brief time we had trying to help out a bonafide rarity for these parts......

    keep ya posted!
