Has to be something really grim going on for me to miss a show. Even a fairly small one like the Clear Channel show. Next big one isn't until July 7 and that's 6 months since the last one. I wonder why such a long time? Seems like they always have good attendance. 0 -

From what I`ve heard, the spring shows have been pretty bad. The promoters can`t make enough to make the show worthwhile? Since it`s been so long since the last LR show, I`m hoping this one has a good turnout? 0 -

I have never been to that range either. Doesn't have a long enough rifle range for me. I have my own pistol and rifle range set up at home. Pistol shooting is on my property and the rifle range (up to 600 YD) is on my neighbors property.

I have been to the Mayflower range and the facility is pretty nice (but as noted no range beyond maybe 200 yards which is fine with me but others want something more challenging). The problems with Mayflower are numerous. Start with that it's closed on holidays and I like to go shooting on holidays. Also, it's very busy and that interferes with doing my thing. Plus, they have so many ridiculous rules. No rapid fire, no human targets, show your guns to the attendant when you arrive, no loaded guns or magazines on the property once off the line and the guy is always yelling at you over the loud speaker not to do this and not to do that. Who needs it?
I joined the Benton Gun Club. The range is about the same distance from my house as Mayflower and for $60 a year I can use it 24/7/365 (although there are no lights so shooting after dark may be an adventure). Not as busy during the week and at least open on holidays.
The club also puts on a variety of competitions although I haven't gotten into any of that.
I wish I owned some land where I could have my own range. It's one of my dreams (likely in the big pile of dreams that will never happen).
I was at the show for an hour and saw to handguns that caught my eye. A 1956 S&W .357 Magnum (pre-27 although I don't use that term) and a 1954 Colt .357 Magnum. But I didn't need either and and already had several similar examples of each so I decided I have to draw the line somewhere.0 -
Hey SAXONPIG, if the Benton and Mayflower ranges are both about the same distance from you, you are probably close to LR. I live close to Ward and Beebe and work in NLR. Might have to try to get together and do some shooting sometime out here.
The wife has just begun to get into the whole pistol shooting thing and is getting good really fast (sure don't want to make her mad!!!!) I love that she is getting into it. Makes it a lot more fun to me. I have been making some targets lately and have a few different ones and different sizes for pistols.
As for the owning enough land to shoot on, I wish I had enough to have the long rifle range on, but for now I have to use my neighbors and shoot down the property line. Like you, I am dreaming about it

the benton club just bought some more land in that old alcoa pit. its a bumpy ride to get to it, and if you dont know which right turn it is off the dirt road, youll drive for eons.
benton is hot, no shade and no shotgun ranges.
if you like skeet, dont go to benton.
if you like rifle/pistol, its heaven.
they have meetings at the holiday inn monthly.

There is a shotgun range at Benton. It's not much and maybe not what you'd consider a real range?

shotgun range means a trap. thats it.
they poured the stations for skeet, but never installed it. houses arent even in.0 -
Ahh, see I'm not familiar with shotgunning. I can only guess that there isn't enough demand to build the facilities. The club is constantly expanding and developing but only with member urging in the desired direction. They are now building 600 yard rifle ranges, I believe. 0 -

Well, I think my place is a little farther away from you than both ranges. Benton is too far away for me to go, especially since I have a place to shoot pistols and rifles here at home.0 -
I will never go to Mayflower again,the one trip I made there,, first thing they told me was no handguns,,,most of what I carried was 1911's,,then they looked at the Yugo sks's we had and told us they did not like firearms with bayonets still on them ,, we could shoot them this time but dont bring them back unless they were removed,,then they told me no rapid fire so I asked them what they considered rapid fire,,,ANYTHING OVER 5 ROUNDS A MINUTE ,,,we just left,,never fired a round,,I go up to the national forest range in Mountain view most of the time, 0 -
The Mayflower range is run by the feds as part of a hunter safety program. Its mission is geared towards hunting so they take that to mean NOTHING relating to self-defense, military, etc. may take place there. Like I said earlier, no rapid fire, no human silhouette targets, and they don't like military style weapons although I never heard a word about my AR15 or FAL. But then, they don't have bayonets.
There are a lot of limitations and restrictions at Mayflower and that's why I joined the Benton club. Much better.
Handguns have always been allowed in the past until the last time I went and the handgun side was closed. They said it was because of a backstop issue that had developed and it would reopen when the problem was fixed and it was safe to shoot there, again. Maybe it was at this time you were told no pistols, or maybe they never reopened the pistol range.0 -
i was at mayflower in early may and everything looked pretty peaceful. pistol range looked ok. rifle range looked ok, and the skeet/trap range looked inviting. the facilities looked tip top and im sure if one was to act civil, it may be ok.
i know one thing for sure, if i was the rangemaster and i saw some semi auto climbing up and whacking the safety wall, i would be upset too. maybe thats what happened in the past and they dont want people more interested in wasting ammo for a thrill, than practicing marksmanship and disipline there.
but i for one, if i wanted to shoot RF in a timed high power match scenero with my M1A, im going to insist in 10 rounds in 1 minute. its what is required.
benton is about 15 minutes from the house. sure hope they finish that skeet range and get the 600 yd range open soon!0 -

Hey Sharpshooter039, I have never been to the range at Mountain View. My wife and myself both grew up in Timbo. Wife lived there for 20 years and myself for 17 years. Beautiful country up there. Where do you live?0
