What's good in hand held GPS?
Thinking about getting one of these. Anyone have one? What do you recommend?

I have a Garmin E trex Legend. I like it alot but, there are now nicer ones out there. Google GPS Store. They have some good package deals. 0 -
I had an old Garmin 12 that I liked, but sold when I got my Garmin Legend. I now have a Garmin Vista that stays in my truck, while the Legend is on my ATV. You can't go wrong with a Garmin, and they stand by their product.

I've got a Lowrance I-finder that has worked real well. I bought the upgraded card for it that shows a lot more detail like all roads, creeks, rivers, elavations, ect. It has been a lot more useful with it but the card did cost $100. Bushnell has one out now that overlays satellite and aerial photos onto the screen. The Bushnell also has a color screen where my Lowrance is black and white. 0 -
I use a Garmin Etrex Legend Color on my small lobsterboat. I loaded bottom charts in it and can set traps in the fog.
Very weatherproof. Lives in salWar on Terrorer and never had a problem.0 -

Garmin Rino. I gave one away three months ago and still have 2 of them. Great units, and consider the Rino 130 with the gps, FRS/GMRS two way radio and weather radio. Kind of covers all of the bases.0 -
What are you going to use them for? just hunting?they will get you back to the road or camp.Did you ever here of geocaching?its a lot of fun sure teaches you to use a GPS.Take a look at this site.

Mostly just hunting maybe some fishing. Found out my company sells Garmin and I can get one for a little over cost.
They have a 12 month employee purchase program with no interest and auto deductions.
Rino looks good. Can you talk to other brand walkie talkie's with it?0 -

Yes, i have two small motorola radios frs/gmrs??? and can talk to anyone one the same channel and limiter code. OH YA, there is a scrambler function that you will have to turn off for it to work with other brands of radios. no biggie just so you dont get bent when all the other guy hears in a bunch of grarble.0 -

I just got one of these and love it.
The biggest thing that I was looking for in a new GPS was the active compass. I know it still needs batteries to work but you do not need to be moving or even have satalite tracking for the compass to work.0 -
My compass skills are so rusty it's not funny. Not much big wilderness here in IL to get really lost in. 0 -

I have a basic ETrex and most recently the Vista. One thing I have noticed is that the Vista dispite being WAAS enabled is NOT as accurate as my basic ETrex. I can drive down a highway and back numerous times and my ETrex will always show both lanes. With my Vista it wonn't even show the same track on the same lane showing supposedly 9 feet of accuracy. I loaded all my waypoints off my basic onto the vista and many of them are way off when I use the Vista but dead on when I go back to the basic mmodel. I also like the fact that the basic model can be set to show direction of travel in reference to the top of the screen. The Vista will not do that. I bought the Vista for the compass and elevation features though I'm finding the elevation to ne constant reseting. Not sure if the problems are just my unit or the model in general. 0 -
Like others, I've got 2 Garmins, and they would be tough to beat. I used one on the boat, before I lost it in a divorce [xx(], and used the other for deer season/camp. It's amazing how accurate they are. Also have one in my truck, but it isn't a handheld. 0 -
I have two handhelds. One is the e trek and the other is a Magellan. The basic e trek is fine, but the Magellan has a color screen and shows topo. To an old man the topo feature is important. Maybe not important to flatlanders, but if I can go from point A to point B without climbing or decending 60 degree slopes, I'm a happy camper.
The answer to the battery question is to always put fresh batteries in before you go out and about.0 -
