another question for caliber to kill bear
does anyone think a .357 handgun is enough to kill a grizzly bear ? i wouldnt hunt with one but in an emergency in bear country do you think a .357 with hollow points and hopefully 5 rounds put in the bear could kill it or stop a charge ?

You'll notice that in that post, the guy refers to the .38 pistol packing victim as having only managed to get 4 rounds into the bear before it killed and ate him as opposed to the version posted on this forum where the unlucky hiker "emptied all 6 rounds into a charging bears head". There are some other variations. In the Hunter's Life Forum post, the bear allegedly had been determined to have killed and eaten THREE people.

We should always question such stories since often the story itself doesn't make sense if you think about it. For example, if someone really were out bear hunting and shot a bear...why would "they backtrack the bear" in the first place -? And just how WOULD someone "backtrack a bear" anyway?

Zipperzap: I SAID it was useless. But it helps demonstrate that you tried to drive him away first. I have heard people say they sprayed a charging bear, and it just snapped at the cloud. It made him madder. But shoot a griz, and the legal adventure begins.

looks like the first bear too at least 3 shots to bring it down. the second bear could have used a few follow up shots as well.
if those bears had inf act been mad and charging i dont think ANY weapon would have stopped them cold0 -

LOL I know what you mean. I've only ever read of a handful of people in history surviving a grizzly bear attack.
"Common knowledge" has it that when attacked by a bear:'
Black Bear- FIGHT BACK, especially attempts to strike the nose.
Grizzly Bear- PLAY DEAD. In some cases the bears have seemed to lose interest but fighting back will only enrage them and you have absolutely no chance of inflicting enough pain (with barehands or handheld weapon) on a grizzly to cause it to cease the attack.
I'd hate to have put either theory to the test.0 -

If you are serious about being in western and northwestern country with black and grizzly bears do yourself a favor and read about actual bear attacks. Herrero's "Bear attacks" is a start and if you want more, read Shelton's Bear Attacks: the deadly truth.
According to the case histories cited, BOTH bears will climb trees and pull you out of them. Western black bears will stalk and eat you while Grizzlys may just maul you to death.
They recommend a 12 gauge minimum for bear protection.
If you still feel secure to arm yourself with a pistol after reading these actual accounts, good luck to you.0 -
