Remington Speedmaster 552 UPDATE
just picked one up for my daughter for CHRISTMAS hope it will be a good starter 22 [;)]. could not pass it up for 80 bucks [:p]

I teethed on an old Remington 511 ScoreMaster - can't go wrong with those old Remingtons!
Still have/use mine to 'train' the grandkids!

The 552 is a good design and an accurate rifle that IMO would've benefitted from using a steel receiver instead of cheap alloy.
However IMO a single shot is better suited as a 1st rifle.0 -
It was my first ever gun purchase--at about age 16. Still have it and wouldn't part with it. You did well for your daughter. Teach her well, too. [^] 0 -

i have a BSA CENTURY TARGET also to start with but it is a little heavy for her (8lbs+)setup with the single shot mag. (im looking for a 5 shot mag for it)0 -
Over all the old 552's are good little rifles.
However they do tend to have a jamming problem that can get annoying at times. I had one as a kid and got stupid and let it go.
Found one here on GB like I wanted and been searching years for that was manufactured in June 1972 and rated at 99%. Got it for $195.00.
This one will not go anywhere.[^]0 -

thanks great info AUG 1960 was the date for this one0 -
i have a first year production (1957) it started jamming soon after i got it and still jams. the only reason i still have it is because it was a gift. it's been to 4 remington gunsmiths and none could fix it. 0 -

no such thought.[^] i take all feedback good or bad this is why i posted this, i did do a past search for any input and did not find any bad, this one seems to eject the M/T rounds pretty far maybe it will do for now if not im only out 80 bucks and still will have a good looking wall hanger.
im starting her with the bsa i found and then to this one, if i can get her to stick with shooting im sure she will change to one of my other guns, (i hope) she is my last one to try to get hooked. my 19 year old daughter shot a 4 point last week, so i guess she is good to go.0 -

That's a fairly common complaint on these. If they work, they work great. If not, seemingly impossible to fix.
I've got a 1962 vintage that I inherited from my Grandfather. It shoots great, but the barrel has become loose in the receiver. Has about a 1/2" side to side wobble that is unexplainable. Bought new receiver thinking receiver wear might be the cause. But still exists. Still shoots good and due to sights being on the barrel is still accurate.
My comment in regard to a single shot being a better gun for a young beginner is based on safety as well as fostering good accuracy training. For young inexperienced shooters I believe a "one at a time" beginning is far safer.
Plus many a deadly marksman was born on a single shot. When you know you have a follow up shot IMO most people subconsiously get sloppy and hurry their shots. In contrast to knowing that you only have ONE and must make it count.0 -
your correct my first 22 was a single shot. daughter will only want to go with me when not many shooters will be there, not fond of the loud noise from a lot of guns [8)][8)]and i feel it is safer for us as i only have to watch her and not the new guy with a $25 gun next to us.[:(][xx(][:(]

put about 75 rounds of the cheep stuff (fed bulk pack)no jams , even heard one sounded a little off (light load)it went fine also. this is not the norm for me . if it is a bad item it will seek me out before all others0
