"Special" antifreeze...?

My 2000 Dodge Caravan requires "special antifreeze"...what's this..?

I thought AF was AF...

    Nope, getting away from ethylene glycol.

    There are different kinds but your Caravan will take the plain green Ethyl Glycol kind. Prestone Zerex etc make an "all makes all models any color". That is what we use for fleet, a fleet that includes Caravans.

    Does the manual indicate Dex-Cool (the orange stuff) I know my Chevy had that stuff. Anyhow Dex-cool should never be mixed with the green stuff (they will react and break down chemically). Now the Dex-cool and the "Yellow" stuff (supposed to be) can be mixed. Did Dodge go with that "Red" stuff or am I thinking VW?

    Anyhow once you flush the whole cooling system you can use the green stuff or Yellow stuff. Basically you can't just mix (unless it's the yellow stuff) AF in the system with any ol' without checking what you have.

    Your Caravan has an Iron engine block with aluminum heads. Water mixed with ethylene glycol will corrode the water passages in the head, eventually causing the engine to overheat. Aluminum and water aren't a good mix.

    That's just it, bought the van used (no manual), and coolant is too low to see what it had. Guess I'll run it in and get it flushed...

    i was told the (the orange stuff) was not as good as they thought it would be, i would call a shop and check it out before i used the orange. my .02
