.22 WMR VS .17 HMR WHICH IS BETTER
I am about to buy a new target rifle. I currently have a .22 LR and a 7mm Mag. I can't decide between the .17 HMR or the .22 WMR. Everyone I have asked give conflicting answeres as to which is the best purchase. I only target shoot and max range is 125 yds. What can anyone tell me about either one and what is the most fun between the two[?][?][?][?][?]

The 17 will out do the 22WMR. The 17 will shoot accurately at to about 200 yards if the crosswind aint that bad. 0 -
Overall I would choose the .17HMR cause of the flatter tragectory and faster velocity.
However some still prefer the 22wmr for the fact that at real longe ranges the .17HMR does not have the ft/lbs (enegry) to take some larger varmits.
As for the fun of it I could not tell you cause I have not shot them side-by-side; However I would still go with the .17HMR for most varmits.
Just remember since the bore is much samller that it can dirty up real quick, and you will need to pay more attention to it. However I just think the .17HMR and its baby brother the .17M2 are just cool. [8D]0 -
buy one of each and do your own comparison. then which ever one you don't like do a giveaway.

I have and do own several .22 magnums...and they will not shoot worth a darn. The .17's will outshoot them hands down, as far as acuracy goes.
The boys using the .17HRM wax elequent over the killing power of the .17...one reason being the ability to slip that little slug into aan earhole at far away distances.....
The only reason to buy a .22 Mag is to convert it.....just my opinion.0 -
I'm not so sure the bore dirties up quickly. I put 850 ruonds thru my 17HMR shooting sagerats one day and never cleaned it. It was shooting as good after all those rounds as it did when I started. I have a Savage Stainless bull barrel model and love it. 0 -

VARMINTING--Remington Plans 17-221 Fireball Factory Rifle: Remington has confirmed plans to release a factory varmint rifle chambered as a 17-221 Fireball. We have no firm dates for a product launch, but we expect the new rifles to be available in the first quarter of 2007. Currently, Remington offers just one 17-caliber chambering, the .17 Remington. That is available as a Model 700?,? BDL?,? or Model 700?,? LV SF. Given the efficiency of the Fireball case, we can expect a 17-221 to comfortably reach 4,000 fps with a 20-grainer, and Remington sources have hinted that a 4000-fps factory load will be offered. In 17 Mach IV wildcat form, shooters are reporting 3,850 fps with 25 grainers. From what we are told, the 17-221 will have a slightly longer neck than a 17 Mach IV. That means you won't be able to use Cooper Arms' loaded 17 Mach IV ammo. We haven't seen a blueprint of the new Remington brass yet, so we don't know if the shoulder is the same, with just a longer neck. Accordingly we're not sure whether the current 17 Mach IV full-length dies will work. But you should be able to neck-size the case with a Redding .221 Fireball Type-S die with smaller bushings. I think it depends on what size varmits you want to shoot. If it is crows go with the 17. If you think you might shoot something the size of a coyote -- I would rather have the ft lbs of energy of a 22 mag.
A real varmit gun? For critters of all sizes? .223, 22 Hornet, 22-250, 204, 243, 6MM.
I have a 22 mag and suffered the same thoughts as you. However since wind is often a factor where I live, I choose the 22 mag for that and the ft lbs knowing that I may end up with an occassional coyote opportunity. I also have a High Standart double 9 pistol in 22 mag and now I have a matching rifle.[;)]0 -
I don't own either a .22Mag or a .17 but sell and have shot both.
Stick with the .22Mag. It is an established round that is not going to lose favor and be discontinued.
It is superior in a crosswind.
It is available most everywhere.
It is cheaper to shoot.
In an emergency you can always shoot .22 LR in your weapon.0 -
Why not buy one from me with interchangable barrels.
.22 WMR. or .!7 HMR.
