MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. -- The skeletal remains of an elderly woman were found Friday in her home, more than seven years after neighbors last reported seeing her.
Ann M. Simmeck apparently died of natural causes, according to an autopsy conducted later Friday. She would have been 79 years old.
The autopsy could not determine the year and date of her death, believed to have occurred several years ago inside her split-level ranch home.
The home, which bears a strongly worded "no trespassing" sign, still had working electric service. Calendars and food inside the freezer were dated 1999 and earlier, neighbors who talked with investigators told The Hartford Courant.
Officers visited the property Friday and found Simmeck's skeletal remains after a family member became concerned about Simmeck's absence and called police.
"The last time I physically saw her was 1998, 1999," said Mary Carlson, Simmeck's neighbor since 1997.
Simmeck's family members could not be reached Saturday morning.
Neighbors said Friday that Simmeck's estranged husband used to mow the lawn and care for the yard, but told them a few years ago that he didn't have keys to the house and never went inside.
State police detectives are investigating, and the state medical examiner's office will continue to try to pinpoint the year and approximate date of her death.

daily occurance in florida. my cop buddies say they get a call at least once a week from retirement homes about smells.[:(] 0 -
.....and the moral of the story is always owe someone money. That way someone will come looking for you if you don't pay your bills. There IS something screwy here, tho- who paid the light bill, property taxes, etc? SEVEN YEARS of junk mail in the mailbox? grass not cut for SEVEN YEARS? Wait for the other shoe to drop on this one. 0 -

My bet is the estranged hubby was happy to NOT hear from her, and just kept paying the bill.

This happened in February...
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Police called to a Long Island man's house discovered the mummified remains of the resident, dead for more than a year, sitting in front of a blaring television set.
The 70-year-old Hampton Bays, New York, resident, identified as Vincenzo Ricardo, appeared to have died of natural causes. Police said on Saturday his body was discovered on Thursday when they went to the house to investigate a report of a burst water pipe.
"You could see his face. He still had hair on his head," Newsday quoted morgue assistant Jeff Bacchus as saying. The home's low humidity had preserved the body. (Watch for views inside the house and why no one ever bothered to check on him )
Officials could not explain why the electricity had not been turned off, considering Ricardo had not been heard from since December 2005.
Neighbors said when they had not seen Ricardo, who was diabetic and had been blind for years, they assumed he was in the hospital or a long-term care facility.0 -
