300 WIN MAG REPLACEMENT
I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING A RUGER M77/MARK II 300 WIN MAG FOR DEER HUNTING (OPEN FIELDS & WOODS), I LOVE THIS GUN. I HUNT IN NC. PLAN TO BEAR & HOG HUNT NEXT YEAR.
I NOW HAVE A BAD SHOULDER ( I'VE BEEN SHOOTING 30-06 & 270'S FINE WITH LITTLE PROBLEM) & I NEED TO REPLACE THIS RIFLE WITH A EASIER SHOOTING AUTOLOADER, WITH RANGE, KNOCK ABILITY & COMFORT. I ALSO LIKE FLAT SHOOTERS.
I HAVE A BROWNING BAR 270 & IT'S A GREAT GUN, BUT I'M THINKING I NEED SOMETHING THAT WILL KNOCK SOMETHING DOWN, I LOVE NOT HAVING TO TRACK GAME
THE GUN SHOPS HAVE RECOMMENDED - BROWNING BAR 300 WSM (I LIKE THE THOUGHT) - REMINGTON 750 IN 30-06 & 308.
I KNOW THE 30-06 IS NOT A FLAT SHOOTER, BUT A GOOD GUN. I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT A 308 AS FAR AS POWER & DISTANCE.
I NEED ALL ADVICE & INFORMATION, THAT I CAN GET. THANK YOU

Welcome! I am a big fan of .300WM. Have you considered a muzzle brake? The recoil on mine is comparable to a .243. Caution, the muzzle blast is deafening. Not sure what brand or model but you can also try stock from www.knoxx.com.
Or try Benelli in .300WSM with comfortech. Good luck!0 -
Yep, Knoxx Rifle Compstock makes one for your rifle. Check out their demo video. 0 -
Put a Limb Saver on it and go back to the range. 0 -
Why not just get a PAST recoil shield? They make one that encircles the "pocket" of your shoulder and straps above and along the (rib) side. Those Comfortech stocks compress under recoil, and throw your shot unless you use a sandbag under the forearm. 0 -
At the end of last deer season
I bought a Browning lightweight
Stalker in 308 topped with a
Leupold Ultral light scope
2-7x and I love it.
I may be biased but there ain't
nothing a 270,308 or 30-06 can't knock
down on the Eastern Seaboard.
I have a Rem 700 270BDL and it
is more than enough on deer.
My buddy shoots bears with his 35 Rem
and stands by it . I have no experience with
feral hogs. My brother shot one with his
Rem 742 .308 though0 -
take a look at 25-06 0 -
308 is same a 30-06, just a bit less recoil, but as for 300 mag, go with 300WSM then buy dies to reload, it'll perfect for long shots 0 -
A 30-06 is a flat shooting round, just not as flat as the 300 WM. The 308 is some what less than a 30-06, but in a way all of that is irrelevant.
Reducing recoil by the methods recommended is probably a great place for you to start.
If you love your 300 WM then adapting it to your needs may be a lot better than buying a replacement rifle that you don't have confidence in.
Knock down is way overrated and not well understood. Any bullet through both lungs will kill a deer. To instantly knockdown animals requires a central nervous system hit.0 -
Had a Ruger M77 in .338 Win. Mag. Used it for Elk out west. Tamed the recoil buy installing a Hogue overmolded stock and a muzzle brake. These mods also added weight to the rifle. Recoil became very tame. If you love the rifle, modify it for your needs. 0 -
How about 270 WSM or 300 WSM? 0
