OK, cops, is this illegal?
A recent thread got me thinking about self-defense hand weapons, so I started fooling around with a few things. See, Phoenix suxks the sweat off a dead man's foot, there are psychos everywhere and carrrying a gun puts me on edge, so . . .
What I ended up with is a more refined version of the "basher" of my misspent youth. Coils up in your pocket and could pass for a key lanyard.
What I did was cut the eye off a six-ounce cannonball sinker, drill a hole through it, thread a length of paracord through the hole and knot it. Then, I tied a monkey's fist out of more paracord, slipped the sinker-and-cord into the knot, tightened it, and wove the two tails of the knot and the cord through the sinker into a braid, doubled the braid into a wrist loop and tied it. The whole deal is maybe 15" with a loop on one end and a golf-ball sized ball on the other. Just slip your hand through the loop, grap the thong and swing for the cheap seats.
I've seen and used cruder versions and these are just plain nasty weapons, but would something like this be illegal? It's not a blackjack or sap/slapper, or any kind of billy, nightstick or baton.

You must have been a Boatswains Mate.Nobody else knows how to make a monkeys fist. 0 -
Actually, what you describe IS a "Sap, Billy, or Impact Weapon",and I'd really hate to have to explain my new "keychain's" varied peaceful uses to Sheriff Joe.
Get a stun gun or some PunchII if you feel the need to carry something other than a gun; toting a knife might have the same effect.0 -
I'm not a cop, and look forward to the replies.
If this is illegal, what about a cord that could be quickly attached
to a set of keys. My keys could lay a hurtin on somebody..likely me
when the offender ducks, and they come back at me.lol0 -
Rule of Thumb: If you have to ask if it's legal, then it's probaly not. 0 -

46270 can make a monkey fist, and he is an Air Force dude. [:D]0 -
You could always carry one of the old-style can openers. The church-key style, not the one for opening soup.
They make a nasty, jagged wound when slashed with, and when it comes time to explaining it, it's a can opener.
Even if used to open Mexi-cans [:D]0 -
I copied this from www.packing.org. It looks like it might be legal if you have a Concealed Weapon Permit.
In Arizona the permit is truly a concealed weapon permit, so long as the weapon is not prohibited (e.g., nunchakus). Pocket knives may be carried out of sight without a permit but it is unclear if there is any restriction on blade length. (An earlier statement about an attorney-general opinon about blades not exceeding four inches appears not to be true.) Arizona statutes do not address the issue of switchblades but it is likely that the concealed carry of any switchblade without a concealed weapon permit wold fall under the same unclear standards for ordinary pocket knives. Unlike firearms, the regulation of knives is not preeempted by the state and some municipalities have local restrictions, including a 3 1/2" limit on blade length for pocket knives carried in parks in Chandler.0 -
engrave the sinker with something sappy and finish with "Love Mom", and maybe it will pass for a good luck charm or key fob....[;)] 0 -
Read up on the concept of "pressure point control techiques". The few movements they give you are direct, simple and effective. The movements involve the large motor control central nervous system (your's, not your opponent) and so you don't need to worry about training for or remembering a number of fancy, complex moves. PPCT involves your hard body parts hitting your opponent's soft body parts (I.E. never your fist on your opponents hard part of his head) in areas where that soft body part is rich with nerve endings and junctions. Once you sucessfully hit just one of those spots, without even a weapon, your opponent is going to either go down and stay down or become fairly defenseless. At that point you can use whatever you have available and do with them as you please.
PPCT is patented so it might not be available except by paying for a class.0 -

+1 on the Pressure Points. If you've ever had it used on you, you know how effective it is. All you want to do is whatever they want you to. Very good for taking the fight out of someone. Can't get in trouble for totting something in your pocket, or that your not supposed to either.0 -
when goingto or working in a heavy hood i carry a can of ether or carb cleaner and always my tomahawk. spray either in their face and their down.[;)] 0 -
I tote an 8' length of 1/0 wire tied to a 15# boat anchor around. I even have a custom made holster for the whole unit. It's tough to conceal sometimes. 0 -
Here is what you need:

common sense: use low gear when the roads are steep, wear high boots when the poop gets deep, when you ride watch out for cars, order longnecks in strange bars.[;)] 0 -
BW, what you've got would be consiered a deadly weapon. Arizona is much like here in that you can carry a deadly weapon in plain view with out a CCW, but in your pocket a CCW would be required. I'd reccomend that you carry a gun. Just because you don't want to have to shoot anyone, dosent mean some scumbag has the same morals. 0 -

This is a monkey fist. It's mostly used to add weight to the end of a heaving line.

"I've always had that problem, even though I am a very laid-back kind of guy (despite my propensity for making very gnarly weapons) and I don't start static with people"
You said that you carried a can opener for the purpose of putting a deep scratch on the length of a car of someone who annoyed you while you were riding your motorcycle. That doesn't sound like someone who is trying to avoid trouble.0 -
...don't know if it's legal or not but, why bring a six ounce cannon ball sinker with a braided monkies fist knotted cord....to a gun fight?...[:D][:0]

Where can one buy Punch II these days. I used to buy it mail order from a company up somewhere in the NW, but forgot the name of the seller. This is real potent stuff. I bought some Fox Labs, haven't used it but it will have to go some to beat Punch.0 -
I can only speak for Va. law, it would be Malacious Wounding, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault with the intent to mame or kill or "Murder" if the suspect died from the trauma. You could tell the truth that you used it self defense, but how do you think a Jury would see it? Im also sure there is great Civil Liability that would go along with this as well as other pending criminal charges. Thats what this society has came to. 0 -
