officer shot....with his own gun

EAST EARL TOWNSHIP, Pa. - An East Earl Township, Lancaster County, police officer was shot and wounded around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

Police said Officer Greg Yarbough, 39, a six-year veteran, told them he was on duty when he noticed a suspicious person outside his own home, which is along Route 23 near the Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Police said Yarbough's wife was inside the home and he went to confront the man. Yarbough said there was a scuffle and he was shot with his own gun.
"There was definitely an active struggle for the firearm and the firearm went off. That's all I have at this time," said Pennsylvania State Trooper Blain Hertzog. "I don't know the whole circumstance of how the firearm went off, OK. I don't know if the other individual had the officer's gun or if just in the struggle the firearm went off. I do not have that information as of this time."
Police said they have recovered the officer's gun.
Yarbough was airlifted to Lancaster General Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound. Officials would not say where he had been shot. The Associated Press has reported that he was hit in the leg.
"Obviously, it being an ongoing, active investigation, where the individual we are looking for is not in custody yet, there are certain things we cannot talk about," Hertzog said.
The only description that police provided of the individual Yarbough scuffled with is that he was a man dressed in black.
Suspect Search Scaled Back
Shortly after the shooting, police launched a massive search with the help of 15 police departments, a helicopter and police dogs.
"I woke up last night to sirens about 1 o'clock," said neighbor Cheryl Zimmerman. "I assumed there was a highway accident and I kind of looked out toward 23 and saw all these lights, and then went back to sleep -- and then woke up again when I heard the helicopters and thought, 'Wow, this must really be bad.'"
Police have since scaled back their search and said they believe the suspect is no longer in the area.
The police mobile command unit left the scene around 6:30 a.m., and many roads that were shut down early this morning have reopened. However, police said officers do remain in the area, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.

that is what the sherrif told me when I tried to get him to arrest a trespassing thief.
