$150 is cheap! We bought my wife a new bike 7 years ago at "performance bikes" and paid $350 - and that was marked down from $500! It was like the cheapest bike they had.

Get one of those bike computers with the speedometer in it.

BTW: She has ridden it 1/2 time since we got it. It is now a decoration on our garage wall next to my Cannondale which I also don't ride.

I got this one in this color a few years back (not this youth model though):

Got my wife a matching one (different color though)

The nicer Treks have come down a lot over the years I think. I love mine. We get out quite a bit now. I think we're the only adults in our town that ride bikes though. It's a shame because we have a great bike path.

My brother in law is a hardcore off-road biker.

He runs on some $3800 Iron Horse or something like that.

    Congrats on your decision.

A decent low end bike starts at 350.00 up.
The new Schwinns are made in China.
I have a 600.00 aluminum mntn bike that I bought used for 125.00 and it is better then the new 3-400 dollar bikes and are funner to ride.
There is a definate quality difference and the shifting braking are all smoother and more positive.

    Well I got it [:D]

Took it for a 2 mile ride ... legs feel like spaghetti, and I'm still a little out of breath, but it was fun! I'll do a few more of those before I venture out much further.

Thanks all for the advise and encourgement!

Bikes are a great way to exercise! build up the largest muscles in the body, the thighs and you will burn more calories daily.

I commend your efforts, but I don't want to see you out on the Topeka streets in tight spandex shorts, eating bananas![:D][:0]

You might want to try wearing some clothes along with the helmet.
